> I wonder if people like the ones in your anecdote feel a sense of loss whenever they move to more urbane parts of the country?

It’s very possible. While there aren’t many people around here from the south, there are many, many people from small towns and rural areas of Wisconsin, and a certain percentage never shut up about how awful it is here, how expensive everything is, how stupid every who disagrees with them is, and how much better everything is in Wisconsin.

They well could feel a sense of loss and dislocation.

> My sister-in-law got a job at State University in Alabama, so she and my brother moved there over twenty years ago. (She has a Ph.D. in the sciences). While they enjoy some aspects of the deep south, as educated atheists who don’t care for football it has been difficult at times for them. My brother once described a conversation he had with a stranger while standing in line at Lowe’s:
> STRANGER: WHOEEEE! The Tide’s gonna be great this year! Gonna be great! Who you like?
> BROTHER: Excuse me?
> STRANGER: Who you like? Alabama, or Auburn?
> BROTHER: Sorry, what do you mean?
> STRANGER: Do you like Alabama, or Auburn?
> BROTHER: What are we talking about here?
> STRANGER: FOOTBALL! Do you like Alabama?
> BROTHER: Oh. No, I don’t watch football.
> STRANGER: [pause] So you like Auburn, then?

> They’re constantly asked about where they go to church (they’ve learned to dodge the question), dealing with “Creationism,” and “Intelligent Design” still has my SIL rolling her eyes, and I’ve been hearing about Judge Roy Moore for years. They had a campaign sign for Obama in their front yard, which local vandals lit on fire, so they replaced it with another one that was promptly torched as well, not to mention the mailbox getting destroyed and garbage thrown in their lawn.

Next time you get this, take out a coin and ask them: What’s the most you ever lost on a coin toss?

I grew up in the South, but I no longer consider myself a southerner. Then again, I really don’t know what I consider myself - I’ve moved around a lot in my adult years. I feel like I have no home.

I probably could not bring myself to live in the South again unless it were some place like Asheville, NC. That’s probably the only place in the South I’d consider living.

Nobody would like living here in the South, probably shouldn’t move here.

Northern Virginia ain’t so bad. Some parts of North Carolina aint’ so bad. And don’t get me twisted, there are a lotta good folk in the South – I like a many of 'em as individuals. Shit, I love 'em as individuals, considering most of my folk are still in LA, TX, Bama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. I cain’t escape who I am (was) and where I’m from. But the fucking collective culture, the fake piety, the racism…fuck that. I’d point out the misogyny, but honestly, I’ve seen more misogyny in supposedly ‘progressive’ places all over the map than I have the South. Misogyny is everywhere - in some ways, the South, with its patriarchy, is more honest about it.
