Is the Straight Dope MB your first MB?

No. I was part of a forum for the game Tomb Raider. Unfortunately, it was taken over by teenagers. Also, that kind of narrow focus meant that every time we’d go off on a tangent, some fanatic would whine about returning to the subject at hand. Here, going off on tangents seems to actually be welcomed.

Nope. My “first” was the Bronze, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer site (where daily conversations can range from Civil War history, Roman Catholic doctrine, taking the bar exam, pets, and fictional roleplaying called WITTs, from Harry Potter to Hamlet. Oh - and we sometimes talk about BtVS). I’m a Bronzer, first and foremost. I’ve travelled to LA, Atlantic City, Philadelphia, Vegas and Washington DC and to Chicago to party with my friends. that’s my home. Someone posted a link once to a SD column, and I started visiting here. Honestly, I don’t feel as at-home here as I do there, but I enjoy eavesdropping on your posts, and occasionally putting in my two cents. It’s been educational, to say the least (although I still wish I hadn’t followed the felching thread).

The SDMB is also my first and only. This website seems to draw people who are more intelligent than some others I’ve seen. Not that I’m trying to kiss up or anything;)

As well as those of us who appreciate the finer things in life, right OESGal?

Hmm . . . hard to say. Problably the first that I’ve lurked at consistantly, but I’d posted to all sorts of other random ones before this one. And I read several others, and participate in a few reasonably regularly. None of them suck productivity like SD, though . . .

LOL! I gotcha hooked eh. Something good came out of all that nonsense!

I used to go to a chatroom-type place during the sumer before soph year of HS, but that was baseball challenge and not an actual MB. This is my first, though.

Are you kidding? I’m a message board addict!
I don’t remember my first one-probably one connected to a website. Here are some I have enjoyed over the years (and still do!)
Mark Hamill Topics Board
the Old Bantam Books Star Wars message board (sadly, it no longer exists…)
Hissyfit (Wing Chun is a CUNT!)
Mighty Big TV (see above)
Snopes Message Board
Customers Suck Message board
Mookville
Smile and Act Nice (my personal favorite…I LIVE there!)
The old V. C. ANdrews Message Board (another one gone…)
A few Titanic, Anastasia, and Romanov boards…
I"ll probably think of more later…

Not my first - I was on NoWonder http://www.nowonder.com/ message board for a while which was VERY similar to SDMB. In fact I got here thru a link posted in Nowonder. Now the sad part. About 2 weeks after I came here, Nowonder was taken over and revised completely into a tech-info only site where they want you to PAY (Ye gads!) for the info that they used to disperse for nothing under the old management. (its now epeople.com) All the wonderful discussion groups were out the window without any warning at all. Sure miss the guys from Nowonder - Doctor Doom, Snarkie, Dreambird, Herringsauce, where are you ?? snif snif

Don’t mind me, I am just (still) going through withdrawl symptoms.

This is my first non-sports message board. I’m a regular reader/occasional poster of/on boards for University of Wisconsin and Missouri sports as well as a Big Ten board. (Just last week there was a link to one of Cecil’s columns on the Wisconsin sports board.)

I found this board some time in May via a link on another site (can’t remember where) to a thread here where everyone was apologizing for anything that ever happened in the past or will ever happen in the future. That kind of caught my attention and I checked it out further. After a couple of months of lurking I registered last month.

This is my second MB…but the first that I’ve belonged to is quite small…

I feel like I’ve moved from a small town to the big city…with the number of users, etc.

Nope. Hang out regularly on Parentsplace. Started with BBS’s - the first was on a TRS-80. Discovered the net, then alt.callahans, then IRC #callahans, then my husband. woo hoo! This is by far the most intelligent board I’ve ever been a part of, but Parentsplace really helps me understand our children.

This isn’t my first but definatly my fave. I was first on a grief MB when my brother died. Then I found a breastfeeding board and hung out there for about a year, found snopes and lurked there more than anything and when someone posted about Wally over there I found this place and LOVE IT.

This is my second, sort of. My first was the old AOL SDMB. I found the AOL board because it appeared on the AOL Welcome Page. Thought I’d faint. Cecil’s column does not appear anywhere here, but I’d read all of his books, several times. Loved them. Got involved with the MB, and haven’t left. I love it here.

Back when I was an AOLer, I hung out for a while at a forum for women motorcyclists. I made a good friend there, but dropped the board and eventually dropped AOL.

Right now I seem to be weaning myself away from the cybercafe where I’ve been hanging out for the past three years. It’s been a wonderful place to swap repartee with a lot of quirky, intelligent posters…but lately they seem to be undermined by the trolls, and it’s getting mean-spirited.

I found the SDMB through a link from that cybercafe. I arrived right around the time WallyM7 died; can’t remember when I ever felt so touched by someone I never met. I read through the links to favorite Wally posts and felt tremendous regret that I missed out on meeting him here. There will be no new Wally sigs.

But it made me feel like this could be a really special place. So I’ve been lurking off and on since then, trying to decide whether I really want to get sucked in to another site that’s going to encourage my procrastinative tendencies. Maybe it’s inevitable…

Yet another long-time BBS participant checking in.

Although it’s been a few years since I’ve been active in any BBS and right now this is the only MB I’m active in. Guess there must be something about this place…

::stops before breaking into full-out gush mode::

Two of my daughters and one of their friends each have their own Web sites, and I have posted on all three of those message boards just to bug them (I hope that doesn’t make me a troll). This is the only large forum type message board I have ever visited, but I’m finding out about more.

My first and only. I started reading SD when the first book came out - it wasn’t published in any papers around here, and I think I just came across the book in the bookstore and couldn’t pass it up. It was completely original, before all the second-rate knock-off “ask-a-question” columns started, and I enjoyed the book so much that I waited patiently (several years, as I recall) for the chance to run out and buy the second one. (In the meantime I did give an itelligent sister a copy of the original as a gift.) I didn’t get a net connection until about two years ago, and after sightseeing around the web for a while, I recalled the internet-posted questions and comments that were a part of the last SD book I had read, so I typed in the only logical address and here I was. I lurked for at least six months before a topic came up that resonated so strongly that I could no longer restrain myself, and so made my virgin post. I have glanced at a couple other MB’s but have been instantly revolted by the low-level exchanges (“this is really sttupidd you omust bee some kind of mooron” type of stuff). I’m sure there are other decent boards among the countless sites out there, but since I have the SDMB, why settle for anything less?

You know, that old saying about not going out to look for skim milk when there’s cream in the fridge…

Yes, it was my first…
Message Board, you sickos.

I had no idea I would get this big of a kick out of postin/reading posts.

Who knew?
