I’m not that big a blues fan, but I sure think the Stones cut some good tracks.
But for me, “Rocks Off” doesn’t rise to the level of “Paint it Black,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” or “Gimme Shelter.” Or “Sympathy for the Devil.” Those are classics.
Put it this way: I don’t even remember hearing “Rocks Off” before. I couldn’t have told you whose song it was. I finally listened to it today. It starts to get a little interesting in the last half, I guess.
One from today’s listening - Mama Kin by Aerosmith. From back when Aerosmith were a Stones rip-off band that somehow almost equalled the original, rather than a sad joke.
While I think the Stones peaked with “Gimme Shelter” and “Sympathy for the Devil,” I could make a good case that the primal Stones album is the American version of Aftermath, and “Paint It Black” is everything a Stones song should be.
They didn’t do that song nearly as well as a dude in the 8-track days named Ian A Anderson. I forget the specifics of who he was or where he was from but he did a cover that was almost blue-grass-ish-seriously-hippy and totally kicked ass on any other rendition.
That album just resurfaced in my collection and is now on regular rotation, really fun album.
I’m voting for Get off of my Cloud or It’s only Rock and Roll
I’m now listening to the Pretenders album *Learning To Crawl *and was reminded of this thread, and I noticed that it’s totally male dominated. So I give you a song by Chrissie that totally rocks (it’s one of my favorite songs of all, and I think it’s better than Rocks Off, so it qualifies for the thread):
