I use a set of AAA Eneloops in my headlamp at work; they last a full week of working nights, with very little output drop-off until they’re almost dead.
CandlePowerForums has a forum with loads of info about Eneloops (and other batteries); the signal/noise ratio isn’t the greatest, but it’s not “find the needle in the haystack” bad.
