I think it’s fair to say that some of the Golden Age performers could deliver better performances with directors who would know the difference between mediocre work and good work and could say “That was good. Let’s try one more”. Check out Cronenberg’s Rabid to see what the late Marilyn Chambers could do with a decent director.

I just thought of a perfect example. Halle Berry won both a Oscar for Monster’s Ball and a Razzie for Catwoman - which she accepted in person, holding the Oscar. Same actress, two vastly different films.
