Thing is, guns are only artificially a partisan issue; outside of the danger to public safety they represent, they don’t matter. The populace being armed to the teeth or totally disarmed neither weakens nor strengthens either side, nor is their presence or lack something either side requires for ideological consistency. If political history had gone a bit differently you could have an America where the Right strongly favored gun control in the name of “law and order”, while the liberals supported guns “to defend individual rights”.
That’s not true of something like abortion, which is a matter of whether women should be persecuted or not; that’s innately partisan. Nor is it something like supporting a huge military and low taxes at the same time, which is internally contradictory. Nor is it like being antivax, which is both irrational and actively dangerous to everyone else.
