Don’t mean to sound self-centered here (however, to quote Zaphod Beeblebrox “If there is anything here more important than my ego, I want it hunted down and shot!”), but I’ve wondered about this…

If I post to a thread that has, say, 50 responses, then leave and come back a day later to see if anyone has responded to my post… I have to scroll thru 50 responses that I have already read before I find mine, and can begin to read the responses that I have not yet seen!

Any way around this? Sometimes, in a thread that is 4 or 5 pages long, it takes me a while to find out where I left off, and begin the new responses…

[demanding 3-year-old moment]I wanna skip the posts I have already read!!! I wanna find the new ones NOW!!! NOW!!!{/demanding 3-year-old moment]

Not really, sorry to say.

The system can’t keep track of where you started and where you stopped except in a very general sense.

In your browser you could try “find in page” for your user name, clicking “find next” until you saw your last post. I doubt it would save you much time but it would be satisfyingly self-centred.

This is actually quite a timesaver, especially if you
Use the control key **Ctrl-f**
One thing to note is that it only searches the current page.

Some people around here ( **Exprix** , **TubaDiva** and many others) **add a signature in the text**.

Then the search returns every post of theirs along with any mentions in other threads.

(Some names, as \*\*Dry[/] has bemoaned, do not work well with this, as they bring up generic words in sentences.)

This may work for you.
On the last post you’ve read in a particular thread, hover your mouse over the _quote_ button.
Take down the number where it shows postid=955282 or whatever.
Then in the location bar at the top add the following to the end of the URL: #post955282.
Press enter and it should bring the post with that number to the top of the page.
Then bookmark it.

Then you can use your bookmark to take you back to where you left off. You’ll probably have to clean your bookmarks out a lot though.

OK, Jim slipped in here as I was cooking up an incredibly long post to say what he did in a sentence or two. Kudos, Jim. Anyway, just so I’ve got something to show for the last half hour, here’s the form of the URL you’ll want to use with a postid:

Thanks, Beatle. Great minds, ya know. Yours is just more thorough than mine.

The form of the URL that I discribed above will come out like this:
This and the form Beatle showed, both work the same.

Another tip that might help if you are using Netscape 4.7 or something close to that. Set up a personal toolbar. I have several buttons on mine but the important one is the _Temp_ button. When I’m researching something or just want to come back to a URL later, I drag the little bookmark icon onto the Temp button. That way all the link are in the same place and I can clean them out a lot easier.

Could you provide idiot-proof steps on how to do this for people like me? Thanks!

I may be able to, but I’ve had Navigator for a long time and I don’t remember at what point certain feature became available and how long some of what I see has been carried over from upgrade to upgrade.

But, here goes. If you click the _View_ menu selection and the top item is _Show_ and when you hover over _Show_ and a secondary menu shows up and the first 3 items on that menu are _Navigation Toolbar, Location Toolbar,_ and _Personal Toolbar_, then we are at least starting on the same page. Make sure there is a check mark beside each item.

Now:[ol][li]Click the _Bookmarks_ button and selct _edit bookmarks_[_]Do one of the following:
[_]If you have an Item named _Personal Toolbar_, right click it.[_]If not:[ul][_]Right click the top item.[_]Click New Folder…[_]In the properties box, change the name to Personal Toolbar[_]Click OK[_]Now, right click the _Personal Toolbar_[_]Select Set as Toolbar Folder[/ul][_]There is no item ‘C’, Hi Opal.[/ol][_]Select New Folder…[_]Change Name to _Temp_ and click _OK_
[/li]There should be 3 toolbars, the 1st has the _Back, Forward, …_ buttons, the 2nd has the _Bookmarks_ button plus the location bar and the 3rd has at least your _Temp_ button.

If you are still with me at this point, you’re a better man/person than I.

So, now how to use the thing. [ul][li]Visit any web page[_]Put your mouse one the little icon next to the word Location on the Location Toolbar.[_]The cursor should turn into a hand[_]Drag that icon to the Temp button[_]It should open a secondary menuDrop the icon on the secondary menu[/ul]Now when you click the _Temp_ button, everything you have dropped in there is just one more click away. You can make as many buttons as you want. I have 10. My _Straight Dope_ button has items for each forum, the homepage, the main forum list, and the _People of the SD_ page.[/li]
If anyone is still interested and I lost you somewhere along the line, then let me know where you fell off the track and I’ll try to get you back going again.

Jim
