As I split some logs today, I was surprised how much stress the act of swinging the maul put on my abdominal muscles because I hadn’t done it before. I didn’t think it would use those muscle much at all compared to one’s arms and back.

So is there any sort of website that illustrates which muscles are used when we perform mundane actions? I’d google it, but I can’t think of what I’d use as a search term.

The [master muscle list](http://www.meddean.luc.edu/lumen/meded/GrossAnatomy/dissector/mml/) is the closest thing I’ve seen. [ExRx](http://www.exrx.net) also has some good information on individual exercises, although it’s far from complete.

I second \*\*ultrafilter’s \*\* links.

And the classic print work is probably \*Kinesiology of Exercise \* by Yessis: [http://www.amazon.com/Kinesiology-Exercise-Michael-Yessis/dp/0940279363](http://www.amazon.com/Kinesiology-Exercise-Michael-Yessis/dp/0940279363)
