How about an email client?
Most of the providers expose cell phones to email. [Here’s a page that lists some major ones](http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/939/sms_email_cingular_nextel_sprint_tmobile_verizon_virgin).

I haven’t checked with other cell phone carriers, but with Cingular, you can from their website.

If it’s Verizon, just type [AAAEEENNNN@vtext.com](mailto:AAAEEENNNN@vtext.com), where AAA is the area code, EEE is the exchange, and NNNN is the rest of the number.

Here’s one that will work for [several different carriers](http://www.killsometime.com/TextMessage.asp), just select the right one from the dropdown menu.
