Is there an evolutionary reason for masturbation?

But that hasn’t been true in the long term. Given that masturbation is common in other species, I’d guess that masturbation predates society. Maybe we should show a little respect for our elders.

This is largely nonsense. If we have evidence of any such society, it is certainly not the norm. Please provide some cites to support the allegation that this is common.

Just because something appeared in a reputable scientific journal doesn’t mean it’s necessarily plausible.

It may be possible to find a positive effect of many behaviors. This doesn’t mean that this is the selective reason for the evolution of the behavior in the first place.

wow!

Or that there is a selective reason for the behavior at all. It may be something as simple as “opposable thumbs + higher intelligence = wanking”.

Higher intelligence and opposable thumbs clearly confer benefits aside from masturbation (though arguably none quite so awesome  ), and the fact that they allow not (necessarily) beneficial behavior may mean nothing at all.

Like the tailbone, erectori pili or the appendix- you’ve evolved to have them (or have less of them), but it doesn’t mean they’re useful.

Let’s not sidetrack this thread into a discussion of whether or not an arranged marriage constitutes rape. If you want to debate this, it would be better to open a thread in GD than to hijack this one.

The Wiki article states that “animal masturbation has been observered in many species, both in the wild and in captivity.” So I would go with the relief valve theory.

And I also wanted to point out that the wiki link is really NOT SAFE FOR WORK, just sayin’

I wouldn’t. I’d go with “it feels good, and because we can.” Not every trait, whether behavioral, anatomical, physiological, or whatever else is necessarily adaptive.

Never said it did, I was just agreeing with this, although I would insert not just humans

I would be interested in a study of species reproductive patterns, relative polygamy, freguency of matings per conception, and their tendency to masturbate

A scientific article, published in a peer-reviewed journal?

I’m not saying that it means the article is ironclad law, but one can certainly assume the arguments put forth in the article are at least* plausible*. I mean, c’mon. We’re not talking National Enquirer, here.

Jared Diamond, Ch 14 in Guns, Germs and Steel has an interesting passage.

This description of murder and mayhem doesn’t quite match up with a story of sequential rape, though it seems that marrying one’s husband’s murderer wasn’t exactly unusual, indicating some degree of coercion.

Nor am I saying that 90% of all male deaths in such societies are due to murder. That seems improbable.

Still, murder is sufficiently common to prompt many to attach themselves to any tribal strongman who promises order.
