if there is a shooting war between the US and China, both sides will end up worse off and both sides know it. The Chinese also know that there is a limit to how much worse off the US is willing to end up over a civil war. So if they can change the balance enough, eventually the US may very well give up on the idea of defending Taiwan.
I believe Israel with respect to Gaza comes close.
