Slight hijack , if I may… Paul Ryan went from ‘Tea Party darling’ to ‘RINO’. It seems that this once-far right radical is no ‘too liberal’ to be a ‘real’ Republican. I think I’ve heard that other congressmen and senators who were backed by the Tea Party are not deemed too liberal. Does anyone have a list? ---

Guys like Ryan are not insufficiently conservative for Trumpists in the conventional use of ‘conservative’ in the US in the Buckley/Goldwater/Reagan era. Nor is Trump much of a conservative in those terms. ‘RINO’ has come to mean Republicans who are not populist nationalist enough, mainly on the issues of trade and immigration. In general politics in the developed world seems headed to being divided more along the lines of nationalist v globalist, populist v elite and less about pure left v right. Meantime though Trump has a mainly conventional conservative GOP Congress to work with, and will be largely forced to name conventional GOP conservatives to several 1,000 political appointee positions in the executive branch: the main reservoir of people with govt experience who aren’t Democrats is ex-Bush admin people. So the Trump admin is likely to be mainly conservative, and that’s good/bad news for people still laser focused on right/left. It remains to be seen if the populist v conservative clash in the GOP, which would have been a bloody war if Trump had lost, turns into a major clash right away now that he’s won. It’s not gone though. ---

The Speaker represents the entire caucus, most of which is not Tea Party. John Boehner and Paul Ryan both have sterling conservative credentials but are also compromisers, so that riles TEa Partiers. ---

Trade might be difficult for Republicans. Pro-labor Democrats and Republicans who have heard the protectionist call might be enough of a coalition to give Trump what he wants.
