Is there any "good" in Las Vegas?

What bars are you going to? The high end night clubs with bottle service? Nobody is forcing you to visit those. Go to a hotel bar and get a drink. Yes, it’s going to be higher than normal, but if you are gambling, you can get free drinks.

I suggest that the OP not stay at the Hooters Hotel.

I suggest that nobody stay at the Hooters hotel. Place is a run-down pit as has been for decades.

Just chiming in to add my voice -

Visited Vegas quite a bit for a while, usually with a group of people. I never gamble, but some in the group do. Sex is the furthest thing from our minds, it’s mostly middle aged and older, those with kids bring the kids. Others have pointed out the dam, lake, hiking, etc. For us it’s nice shows, shopping, dining, and lounging by the pool.

I will say that if you think of it as “sin city” then their advertising is working on you. There is plenty for the young hedonist, for sure, but that is only one avenue to pursue. (I will say it is annoying to walk down the street and have 1,000 people try to hand you advertisements for titty shows…)

So, you can certainly enjoy the kitsch, the good shows, dining, etc. But you will be somewhat surrounded by the sin, if that’s something you want to avoid…

I would have never have went to Las Vagas except that I won a free trip there. I am so glad I did. Like you I had some reservations, but really there is so much more. Just walking around (if you can stand the heat) and see what is built, and have some shows (many free), it is just amazing. Also considering where it is, it is amazing what has been done here, actually mind boggling.

It also had this feeling, well two, one was unquestionably ‘money’ in excess. The other was harder to describe but it was a feeling of temporary. These feelings YMMV.

I’m a liberal agnistic, and i hate going to Vegas. I go from time to time on business. I hate it because I often have to walk through smokey casinos to get anywhere, and because the flight there and back is tedious, and because there are noisy slot machines everywhere, even in the airport.

That being said, the shows are great, and they came in all varieties, from titty shows to “family magic shows” designed to be fun to take your grand kids to. (One of the family magic shows, Mac King comedy & magic, is terrific, by the way, and I am something of a connoisseur of magic shows.) I like “la reve”, which is in the style of cirque de soleil, more than the real cirque de soleil shows, but they are fun (and expensive). Several of the nicer hotel/casinos have attractive public spaces is wildly different styles. I enjoy walking around and gawking at the wacky architecture. Just walking up and down the strip can be entertaining, although you will have people try to hand you ads for shows, time shares, and girls.

And, of course, if you can get out of Vegas, the grand canyon is one of the wonders of the world. It’s well worth the trip, and quite wholesome.

I will buck the crowd, and say that I don’t love the food in Vegas. I’ve done better in SF, NYC, Boston, and Houston, but the food in Vegas is fine, and comes in a wide variety of styles.

I think there are also pools and water parks and such. And the pinball museum is fun. You should be able to find stuff to do. And hey, the hotels are affordable, and you can just use the hotel as a base to spend time with your family.

The sex with the prostitutes is a lot more enjoyable when you take cocaine. So remember to bring lots of cocaine.

Really? Last time I was there was about 5 years ago. But I felt like they were catering to the Middle American d-bag crowd.

Last few times I was in Vegas was for various bachelor parties. The biggest one being a week long celebration that coincided with Spring Break, St Patrick’s Day and March Madness college basketball Sweet Sixteen tournament.

All these trips were planned by the same architect, which usually results in several days/nights of drinking, gambling, high-end restaurants, expensive strip clubs, lounging by the pool and brunch at Mandalay Bay all culminating in an epic finale consisting of whisky, cigars and strippers (possibly hookers) at a suite at The Palms and then bottle service in the VIP mezzanine at Rain (the last time coincidently occurring during Paul Oakenfold’s monthly Perfecto show…which is kind of cool if you are a fan of trance and EDM).

Although I think that’s sort of exactly the opposite of what the OP is asking for.

It’s a, ah, it’s a joke, son

…based directly on the “no one is going to hold a gun to your head and make you get a blowjob from a stripper at Spearmint Rhino/ I’ll bet that runs a few hundred bucks” exchange. Heck, it was even quoted right there on the post, pay attention.

Many of those who know do their pregaming on the really cheap at Casino Royale or Stage Door. :stuck_out_tongue:

I hope others go there just for the shows to keep them running.

As for gambling, I have no moral objections to it, but I don’t see the enjoyment in it. I remember in school a math teacher had a lesson about probability and it showed how “the house” always wins. That’s how they stay in business. Above that, the idea of tossing money into a machine and then spending all day trying to get it back sounds like a concept that if it were presented on paper as a business plan, I’d think no one would go for it. But there you have it, people flocking there to give their money to Las Vegas every day and they enjoy doing it. As with most people who go there and talk about their winnings, they rarely talk about what they lost. I enjoy watching the movies that have a gambling theme, because it’s usually an interesting story. But I have no fantasy of walking into a casino and having people flock around me because I’m winning. It just seems like such an empty existence and a false sense of praise of an unworthy achievement.

As for the OP who had a moral problem with the gambling, I don’t see why you care what others do that has no impact on you. Or is it that you’d like to be able to do that, but you don’t because you have a faith telling you not to? I find dumping coins into machines about as interesting as watching people dump money into coin operated laundry machines.

Lots of good insights.

Wait… did someone say a pinball museum?

The shows sound good but I dont think we could afford them. I checked online and I found out tickets to the stripper shows were cheaper than tickets to Penn and Teller and Blue Man. Interesting.

I think Vegas might be worth checking out… once… but I doubt I’d make it a habit. We have considered visiting to see the Monster Truck finals (my kids are big MT fans).

When will you be visiting there? Besides being the City of Sin, Las Vegas is also aptly as hot as hell in the summertime. If you’re not used to desert summers, don’t expect to spend a lot of time outdoors during peak daylight hours.

You pay extra for Penn and Teller to not strip.

NM, should have read the whole thread first. Ninja’d a while ago.

I’ve been to Vegas 3 times and spent a week each time. I may move there to retire someday. I gamble but not much, I drink but not to excess, never had a prostitute but had fun collecting the call girl cards everyone seemed to be handing out. So I guess I’m a middle ground sinner. I am determined to see every show there, but haven’t managed it yet. I still have time but recommend the Penn & Teller show if you have to choose.

We also spent a lot of time seeing the things around Vegas like the grand canyon, a helicopter tour is a lot of fun but we also rented a car and drove up the “back” way seeing the dam along the way.

I’ve also never been without my wife because we like to do our sinning together. Some of the strip clubs are top notch.

I went to Vegas for about five days for a business meeting. It was fun to walk through the casinos, gamble a bit, and enjoy walking up and down the strip. I saw Stevie Wonder in concert one night.

That being said, I never had a reason to go back, and my wife never expressed an interest in going. Once and done.

Well, it’s way out there in the desert, away from everyone else, so when you have to nuke it to get rid of that pesky Randall Flagg, c’est la vie!

I’m going to Vegas this April to get my semi-annual dose of debauchery. It’s pretty good for me.

There’s got to be a twist…

The Grand Canyon is impressive – for about half an hour, unless you can go down into it. Ultimately, you end up feeling like you are looking at a big colorful ditch. And it is a rather long, boring drive. A tad closer is Zion, in Utah, the drive there is nicer (the Virgin River canyon is awesome to drive through, and the area around St. George is beautiful). A little further up the road is Bryce, which is almost as stunning as Zion, in its own way. If you can get away for a day, go north, not south.
