Is there any movie we ALL would agree is good (if not great)?

Both of those are probably out of the running due to the sheer number of viewers (myself not among them) who despise any and all musicals.

I’m thinking a Pixar film might be a good candidate. Up, one of the Toy Story films, The Incredibles, WALL-E, Ratatouille.

There will always and forever be at least one person who will disagree with the opinion of the majority, no matter how overwhelming that majority is.

That can be more of a feature than a bug…

Those are all great nominations.

For live action films, how about Apollo 13?

Yeah, I couldn’t get through it at all. My suggestion is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. You could put that in theaters today and it would be as big a hit as it was when it came out.

Paddington 2?

No joke nominations please.

Sorry but I thought Casablanca was an ok movie but not as great as some take it to be. An opinion apparently shared with Ingrid Bergman

You must be in the 1% who didn’t praise it on Rotten Tomatoes.

WALL-E I can see a lot of people finding boring, and I’ve met folks who find The Incredibles too Randian. But Toy Story and Ratatouille seem like contenders.

For that matter, Christopher Plummer was no fan of The Sound of Music.

Pretty sure Paddington 2 is extremely well regarded.

89% from people. That 99% is from Critics and frankly leaves me scratching my head.

But apologies, I thought it was a joke nomination, I guess it was a real one.

There will always be a group of people who dislike something specifically because so many other people do like it.

Contrarianism, ironically enough, is always fashionable.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone bash Groundhog Day.

mmm

Man, that is a great pick, but someone will probably counter it.

Back to the Future?

Only if you exclude the views of banned members.

OK - the ones that. haven’t been shot down seem to include:

Back to the Future

Mary Poppins

Groundhog Day

Sound of Music

Toy Story

Ratatoulle

Wall-E

Spirited Away

Apollo 13

I’d probably agree with all of the above - but abstain from Spirited Away and Ratatoulle - neither of which I have seen. I tend to not be a huge fan of animation - tho I enjoyed many of the films I watched (tho likely too many times) when my kids were young.

My preferences for this thread (which I’m sure newcomers will miss/ignore)

-a single sincere personal NO vote is sufficient to remove a film from contention.

-try to offer only your personal opinion. Not what you imagine others might think - or even what people you know, but who are not Dopers, have said.

-the standard is not GREATNESS, just solidly good. Maybe really good or entertaining. Just a movies that we all would agree is a couple of hours well spent.

You’re never going to get a consensus on a genre film. Every genre- Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Animation, all of them - have legions of haters.
