Sorry to disagree, lissener but the reality is that no matter what Bush does, you and a small but energetic cadre will continue to bitch and start thread after thread attacking the administration. What is laughable is that these are presented with breathlessness as if a revelation is being passed on to the readers of the land. In other news, the sun rose, and the Pope is rumored to be a Catholic.
Whether you like it or not, Bush was elected, albeit by the narrowest of margins. My comment regarding Gerry Ford was an attempt to inject a moment of pause, as he indeed was not elected to the office of POTUS. Rather than seeing it for what is was, you chose to descend into sophomoric name-calling.
I’ve no interest in your straw, so take your own scarecrow and stuff it. Better yet, I think Mr. Cheney’s oft-quoted comment is appropriate.
Actually, Bush was not elected. The election was “too close to call,” and the SCOTUS stepped in and cut the process short in his favor. Too close or not, the actual count was in Gore’s favor.
Perhaps the kind of thing complained of in the OP wouldn’t happen, if we had a separately elected fourth branch of government – a “Tribunate” – which would police the other three, and also handle “metagovernmental” functions such as running the elections, conducting the Census, and doing post-Census redistricting.
There must be too many Star Wars threads in the Cafe right now, because this reminds me of the difficulty Carrie Fisher had reading that line about Tarkin’s “foul stench” with a straight face, seeing as Peter Cushing smelled pleasantly of lavender.
Rummy would look pretty snappy in one of those uniforms, I must say.
In the early days of the Clinton administration there was some controversy over how the replacement of the White House’s phone system was replaced. The accusation was made that the sole reason for the replacement was so that some friend’s of Clinton’s could make a buck off the deal. There was also some kind of scandal involving the White House travel office, but I don’t remember the details of it.
Nixon also got some kind of gravy loan from Howard Hughes. IIRC, several members of the Reagan administration left during Reagan’s first term and used their White House connections to get high paying, cushy jobs with large corporations. Then there’s the members of Congress who leave office and become lobbyists.
If they live long enough. The way we’re mishandling things NOW is going to allow something very bad to happen in the FUTURE. When that happens, Brutus and his ilk will finally realize that Iraq was a WASTE OF TIME.
