I think the real flaw in her research was thinking men read profiles at all. They don’t they just look at pictures. But when I was attempting online dating I read a profile that had instructions in the very last line to put a keyword in the subject if you wish to reply. I asked the girl how many responses contained the keyword. She said less than 5%. I also have to admit that my primary filter was by picture alone. ---

You obviously do and I do too quite closely. I generally don’t send unsolicited responses to any of them. I have done it before when something seemed like an unusually good match but it is rare. When someone sends me a message, I read their profile closely. I only send messages back to maybe 2% of the ones that write me or maybe a little less. The response rate back from those is about 75% (remember, they wrote me first). I have had a 97% success rate so far (32 out of 33) with getting them to go out on a date after that point (one flaky bitch agreed to it and then cancelled at the last minute so she was gone forever after a stern note from me about basic manners). Profiles are very important to me and any little hint of incompatibility or true insanity (not jokes like this experiment) will cause me to head for the hills no matter how hot their photos are. The same thing is true in bars or other public places. ---

My impression was even totally mediocre women were inundated with attention, and pretty much had all the power in the meetup market. I’ve tried online dating. Even when I would send messages to women who were totally plain looking and talk to them about the interests they discussed in the profile (which I read and sent a message to because I liked their personalities or interests) I got no responses. I get the impression this is fairly common for men in online dating sites. I just assumed only the top 20% of men got anywhere with online dating, for most other men it was pretty much ineffective. ---

Come to think of it, I saw – and passed by – a personal ad in which she said “I’m looking for someone who won’t abandon me the way my father abandoned my mother.” But my standards are a bit higher for a relationship than for … less than a relationship. I’m finding as I get older - finally, finally - I am not _completely_ led by my cock. And it’s quite interesting; it’s a bit like a thrall or a spell is lifting, and you actually see how pretty much your whole life has been shaped it. You even recognise just how desperately sad but fair quesions like the OP asks are. It only depends on the man in the equation. Some guys don’t care what you do or say, will even endure abuse, as long as they see a chance for sex.
