This is getting away from the OP some but still in the story.

When I was a kid that “death of the firstborn” creeped me out because I’m a firstborn.

Then I wondered “What if you are the firstborn of one parent but not of the other?” Does the Angel of Death just make you really sick?

Certainly at the time of Moses, and the writing of most of the Old Testament books, God is portrayed as pretty much local.

True, although even then, he did smite him some bigots. Recall the story of Moses’s Ethiopian wife: Numbers 12-1-16.

I think that at that time and that place the only thing that would count would be if you were the firstborn of your father. Whether or not you were your mother’s firstborn would be pretty irreverent.
