I always hated working from home. I like to keep my spaces seperate.
Although I can see why your coworkers are upset (and agree, they currently don’t factor in commuting time), there is a give and take to every job. In a salary type job, this means you work 45 hours a week (less if its slow, more if its needed), do a good job without complaining, be productive and helpful, and are less likely to get laid off and more likely to see raises and promotions.
(Then again, if you work in one of those companies where this work/reward system is broken, you put in your 40 hours that they pay you for and go home).
You mean there are still people who only work eight hours a day? Must be nice.
msmith, just because you work in an environment that would fit into a Dickens story doesn’t mean everyone is interested in selling their souls for the almighty dollar. Some of us “whiners” aren’t interested in playing a game where the boss has all the cards, cheats, and changes the rules arbitrarily. Some of us “whiners” like to come home and see their families and have lives.
In response to the OP, I’d say sure-- and ask if I can approve my OT when the commute takes longer because of a snowstorm.
If you have an agreement to work 40 hours a week, and you work more than that and you don’t get compensated for it, you are a chump and a sucker. You are being taken advantage of.
If the only way your company can survive is through unpaid labour, then it should fall victim to the market and die. That’s what capitalism means.
