Wow. I thought all that brouhaha about the Clique and its evilness (not to mention the mint-flavored toilet seats) was just a gag, a joke. I never thought someone would be so pathetically, mind-numbingly stupid as to claim that the reason for his popular derision would be due to some vast Dope-wing conspiracy. But this thread has brought about something good… it’s given rise to the mental image of Esprix wearing tights and knee-high boots. ---

Hmmmm. Am I gay? Well let’s see : 1. I post to just about every thread on these boards in which anal sex is mentioned; 2. I have been known to suck cock; 3. I know the verses as well as the choruses to just about every showtune ever written; 4. My book collection contains the whole of the _Vermillion_ series, _The Joy of Gay Sex_, _Men Loving Men_, _My Beautiful Laundrette_, _The Torchsong Trilogy_, _Tales of the City_, many works by the Waughs, Walt Whitman, and Gore Vidal, and just about every issue of _Christopher Street_ published in the 1980s; 5. I never tire of watching Doris Day or Debbie Reynolds movies; 6. My photo albums are filled with snapshots of Mardi Gras past; 7. My address book from the early 1990s has 90% of the names and addresses crossed out as those people died of AIDS. Hmmm, I’m definitely seeing a pattern here. I think I’m going to start using the word “gay” to describe things I think are good. Like, if a friend shows me his cool new car, I’m going to say something like, “Wow, that is such a gay car! I wish I had one just like it!” Or, if someone asks me if I liked the new Star Wars movie, I’d say, “Not really. It wasn’t nearly as gay as the original movie. But, at least it was gayer than Phantom Menace.” Or, if the techno/industrial/speed metal band Tool release a kick ass new album, I’ll be telling all of my metalhead friends, “Dudes, you gotta check out Tool’s new album. It’s the gayest record since 'Sabbath released Paranoia, man.” ---

In regards to **Phlip** ’s whole “figure of speech” argument, I seem to recall a politician _correctly_ using the term “niggardly” and having to issue a public apology over the use of the word. From [dictionary.com](http://www.dictionary.com) **niggardly** 1. Grudging and petty in giving or spending. 2.Meanly small; scanty or meager: _left the waiter a niggardly tip._ So **Phlip** , without adding to the pile-on, or being admitted into any Clique, basically what I’m saying is, don’t go to a predominantly black neighborhood - or for that matter, a neighborhood where seemingly innocent “figures of speech” could be misunderstood - and use the term “niggardly,” whether it fits or not, because 99% of the time\* it will be taken the wrong way. There is no “right” way to take something being referred to as “gay” _unless it is capable of having a sexual preference_. The same goes for posting at the SDMB - don’t come here and use such a stupid word for “bad” and try to defend it as “just a figure of speech,” because even with my above definition as my defense, using “niggardly” - even correctly - would probably be frowned upon. Whether that’s right or wrong isn’t for me to say, but it should be a given that a poster knows better. But this all seems like a severe case of sado-necro-animal cruelty to me; I could have avoided all this with a terse “Yeah, what they all said.” So I cast my vote for “Phuck Phlip.” And while I’m voting, I’ll cast a vote for the pronunciation of **Esprix** ’s name as “espree,” just ebcause it makes me think of candy and I want some right now. (let’s keep the responses clean, people! :p) \*the numerical figure was pulled from my ass; I have no way of tracking percentages like this without getting myself hurt. -Dirty ---

Yes, you’re right. Those of us who belong to The Clique™ or The Cabal™ (betcha didn’t know there are rival factions) can use words like “faggot”, “dyke”, “queen”, etc without any offence being taken. You’re making a lot of assumptions about why this is the case. FYI, I’m not a gay male - I’m not even male. Nor am I a lesbian. I guess my life experiences give me some kind of claim to the label “fag-hag” but that isn’t why I get to use some words in some contexts and you do not, either.
