Because it is marginalizing what happened to the Jews pre-Holocaust. Are we to believe that that is not the implication of this thread? That somehow if Trump wins in 2024 that we will have a Holocaust of liberals? If not, the why the comparison to Nazi Germany?

Thank God they don’t have any alcohol! 😉

The bad news is that I live in a very red area of a purple county in a blue state. The good news _for me_ is I’m an old white christian male, so my fears are much much less than a whole lot of people. That being said, my take on the whole situation.

I hear ya. I’m active in my community, so I have to deal with a whole lot of crazy out there. Maybe because of my privilege (see above paragraph), I feel I can help remove some of the crazy. I got a MAGAnut to admit that CRT is not being taught in Florida schools, and that the thing he was ranting about was a poor teacher, not systemic anti-white racism. I got my BIL to admit that the only reason to own an automatic or semi-automatic gun was because they’re fun. Oh, I also got him to admit that Wayne LaPierre was an asshole. All that being said, there’s a lot of people I won’t engage with outside of the task at hand - work, coaching, etc. I’ve found two different attitudes with church groups - the very loud “Let’s pwn the libs!” and the more quiet “there’s more to a president than abortion” (there’s a lot more liberal Catholics out there than you think), so I tread very lightly there. Much easier to engage one-on-one than in a group setting, and a lot of those group settings become pretty damned uncomfortable.

NATIONALLY, I’m not worried about the US becoming “Nazi Germany” or even “Dirty War Argentina”. Maybe I’ve got blinders on, but I absolutely CANNOT see our nation as a whole embracing that mindset. The real worry is individual nutjobs, or even local/county, and the local/county is more of a “we’ll turn the other way and let the nutjobs run”. Are they going to turn on you because you vote democratic? Probably not (I think the case in Ohio was the exception, not the rule); I can’t even see local/county turning a blind eye to that one. Could they harrass / intimidate / harm you because you’re LGBTQ / have a “funny” last name / have a skin tone darker than “Eggshell” / worship a false god (or no God)? Unfortunately, yes. The optimistic side of me says that could go on, but eventually State / Federal would end it. Sucks while you’re being harassed, but I would stay positive knowing the harassment would end. I will admit here that my expectations are fully influenced by my white privilege.

Our closest friends had a vacation home in Shawano County up until a couple of years ago. My strongest recollection was the fervent anti-Native American feelings.

As **Jay Z** suggests, we could give the Trump nut jobs Shawano and many other counties in nowheresville, USA, and they would have little effect on people who lived where there were more humans than deer.

It’s just the German word for “over”. I know you’re referring to “Deutschland Uber Alles”, but that’s not where the word originated. It’s not like they named the company Fascist Rides.

The Atlantic recently had an article on the politicization of christian churches. Basically, churches that refusesd to take clear Far Right political stances were greatly losing membership to churches that take such stances. Are you seeing anything like that?

How is drawing parallels between 1930 Germany and now “marginalizing” the Holocaust?

Those advocating remembering and memorializing the Holocaust _very much_ want the events of that time to serve as a warning so that sort of thing doesn’t happen again.

If things aren’t so bad here that’s fine, but “it can never happen here” is a delusion.

A reminder that LGBT kids in Texas are getting reported to the police just for being LGBT and their [families investigated for child abuse](https://www.texastribune.org/2022/02/28/texas-transgender-child-abuse/). Some have already been fleeing the state. Florida is heading in the same direction.

It won’t be “all liberals”, at least unless things get really bad. But it’s already some marginalized groups, and it will get worse if not stopped. It not only can happen here, it’s starting to.

Sorry I didn’t notice that in your posts. And I mentioned 1933, simply because that was when Hitler took power. Wasn’t sure of the OP’s intentions. “Pre-Nazi” could go back millennia… 😉

And by mentioning **Dseid** , I did not intend to say anything about ALL other posters. I was just a tad stricken by the number of posters who responded WRT “Nazi-Germany.” Seemed a fine point worth making - whether the OP intended a specific time period, or whether the responders realized what they were doing.

Thanks for the link. I’ll give it a read.

I thought the point of this OP is to express dismay that there seems to be some separation between liberals and conservatives in his area, and that conservatives are getting into these bizarre conspiracy theories and arming themselves. This is different than the OP’s experience in the recent past, where people hung out regardless of political leanings.

So, is this a step in the wrong direction? Probably not, but you don’t really even want to start down a path that ends up at the Holocaust, right? It wasn’t like everything was fine and then the next day, there are concentration camps.

It’s not really that good for our democracy that a large minority of the population is totally misinformed and living in some sort of fantasy world, where vaccines have chips, gay people are grooming kids to have sex with them, and there was massive fraud in the last election. It leaves that population susceptible to all kinds of propaganda.

If you get the wrong person in the White House, you could find your way at that second step.

As I mentioned above, my grandfather went from hanging out with his German peers to being shunned. That doesn’t imply that we’re heading towards the Holocaust, but it’s still a weird turn of events that people are inviting people to BBQs based on their politics.

This was ~56 years ago. The salient question would have to be … _could_ it happen again? What has changed, and by how much, to convince some people that it couldn’t?

This was Northern California in the late-1960’s. While it was also during Vietnam – a highly polarizing time in US history – how different is _that_ element from today, really?

I know leftists who are arming themselves, too, but they aren’t the topic here. The right doesn’t have a monopoly on crazy or violent, but the Right does have more political power at the moment.

The weird thing about this list is that it basically lays out the Jim Crow south, which also wasn’t Nazi Germany, right? And, some of those items also applied to Jews in the US back then.

I guess the Jim Crow south was pretty fascist from the point of view of a Black person back then.

From the article you link:

Even within the Jewish German community, in spite of Hitler not hiding his ardent antisemitism, the worries appear to have been limited. In a declaration of 30 January, the steering committee of the central Jewish German organization (_Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens_) wrote that “as a matter of course” the Jewish community faces the new government “with the largest mistrust”, but at the same they were convinced that “nobody would dare to touch [their] constitutional rights”. The Jewish German newspaper \*[Jüdische Rundschau](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%BCdische_Rundschau) wrote on 31 Jan:[[93]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Hitler%27s_rise_to_power#cite_note-FOOTNOTEUlrich2017-107)

… that also within the German nation still the forces are active that would turn against a barbarian anti-Jewish policy.

Ya know, there were a hell of a lot of protests after George Floyd; a VAST MAJORITY of them were peaceful. Where actual looting occurred, even most of the participants agreed that they were there as opportunists rather than making a political statement. And MOST of the violence (outside of looting) came from the Feds or MAGA groups itching for violence. Portland was almost over, then the Feds came in, and violence increased. Kyle Rittenhouse is a “national hero” because his local Proud Boys were itching for some action.

I’m a good Catholic boy, so I can’t speak to what’s happening with Baptist/Lutheran/etc. Attendance is down since COVID, but I blame COVID for that. Our Associate Pastor is a MAGAnut - he’s had a few homilies where he’s basically said Democrats (esp. Joe Biden) are evil; I believe he’s gotten grief from the Archdiocese about those. I think he’s driven more people from the church than he’s pulled in.

(bolding mine, see below)

I already expressed where I feel we are with regard to comparisons to pre-Nazi Germany, but since the thread is blowing up a bit, I wanted to go back to the OP to climb on my (and others) personally hobby horse again.

In the quote above I bolded the section that is worrying me the most - in that I don’t feel we’re heading towards a traditional secular Fascist state, but I have deep worries that we’re headed into a Fascist state with the trappings of a theocracy.

This I find more dangerous because previously, as many posters mentioned, you could disagree with someone on one or more points of political/economic theory, and you’d consider them wrong (often deeply so), but generally not evil. You could and would be angry with them, but culturally, it would be wrong to express it through violence.

But once God is involved, all those spectrums of gray are thrown out: there is only the righteous, and evil. And violence against Evil is always culturally approved in the modern American version of Christianity (and heck, most other religions, but we know what is dominant in the US).

Much more IMHO dangerous to be the enemy of God than the state in terms of danger from _your neighbors_ specifically.

And that leaves out @Mortimus’ completely legitimate concerns about their isolation. Being forced to self select out of all those weekly events makes them more vulnerable to being ‘othered’, yet being forced to muffle themselves in order to get along is just as toxic, if in different ways.

So in short, while I don’t think we’re specifically in a pre-Nazi Germany situation, we’re _absolutely_ in a fraught, socially conflicted situation that shows no sign of getting better in the near future, and if anything, seems more likely to get worse. As someone in a very red part of a barely light blue state, I sympathize (there are two homes within 1/4 mile of mine STILL flying Trump 2020 flags, which are taken down for care, not just left up non-stop).

Plenty of the mass shootings on [this list](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mass_shootings_in_the_United_States) were targeted at a specific group or groups of victims.

The “rhyme and reason” are hate and bigotry. The specifics are different flavors, but those are the unifying forces.

Until fairly recently anyone homosexual was barred from many government jobs in the US.

Until the 1970’s it was _common_ for universities in the US to restrict admission based on race or religion or ethnicity. Which colleges my father could go to was determined by which ones were willing to admit Jews.

You give several other examples, but the point is that it’s not one and only one law tips the balance into fascism, it’s the accumulation of restrictions, death by a thousand cuts if you will.

It’s a thread about pre-Nazi Germany. By definition the Holocaust is a relevant addition to the conversation. So is discussing Nazis in this thread because of the topic of the thread.

The problem is dragging the Holocaust into discussions where it’s not relevant, not where it is.
