Is this the problem with repealing Glass-Steagall?

Are you fishing for something? It would seem that TBTF is an obvious consequence of unconstrained M&A, it is really the only was to get to “too big”. GM was too big due to decades of buy-outs, clearly the auto industry would function better in a balkanized structure, where cars are assembled from standardized components drawn from multiple sources. TBTF is analogous to agricultural monoculture, the more eggs you put in one basket, the more you risk if the basket gets dropped.

I based this thread on some incorrect notions.

One that Glass-Steagall was what stood in the way of too big to fail and underpinned the financial crisis. I got the idea from following other threads, but it may be a strawman that I set up unintentionally.

Another was the way MBSs and CDSs worked. I am going to open another thread about that.
