Through about the first third of tonight’s debate, I was dismayed to see and hear that Trump was quite calm and coherent. Luckily, after Harris cleverly pushed a few buttons (like “go to a Trump rally, and you’ll see people leaving early”), he started to unravel. He had about six or seven episodes of flailing and ranting. Only one or two were pure-gibberish word-salads, though, and then only briefly. Harris won the debate, of course, in style and substance — but I had hoped for more mentally unhinged episodes from Trump. ---

The flop sweat on his upper lip was really glistening in the lights for a better part of the second half. I thought his spackling crew would’ve taken care of that at the first commercial break, but it was still there when they returned. ---

Post debate stuff, though it is still early, is more promising than I expected: Trump probably blundered by crashing the spin room, and polls appear to show that Harris won the debate. I hope so. ---

Yeah, the Viktor Orban stuff was bad, but anyone who knows who Viktor Orban is probably doesn’t need the debate to help them decide who to vote for. I think “immigrants are eating our cats and dogs” is easier for undecided voters to evaluate as nutso. ---

This seems to be the unhinged statement that may get the most attention in the next few days. However, I get that many Americans have an emotional attachment to dogs and cats they do not have to other domesticated animals. And the claim is that Haitians (that’s the claim) are eating the dogs and cats is untrue for other reasons, including that this is [just not part of their cuisine](https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-39577557). Of course, the real unhinged statement here is that the U.S. Is being destroyed by Biden letting in 21 million people he could keep out with by signing a non-existent law. Where I live, there are many agricultural workers about with questionable documentation, and garage doors are commonly open with no problem. Undocumented migrants live in fear of deportation and avoid anything that would get them police attention. I watched the whole debate. Trump was not confused. He was a coherent vigorous demagogue. ---

I found the bacon and eggs disinformation mouthwatering. Eggs are up because of bird flu (95 million chickens, turkeys, and other poultry have been killed and disposed of since February 2022) and bacon is on sale at my local supermarket every week for $5 a package. ---

Okay. I once had someone tell me in all seriousness, “I don’t see why people think Einstein is so smart. Other than that one thing, what did he do?” and I guess that’s pretty close.
