[Marie Antoinette was into milkmaid cosplay, essentially](https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/i14h6c/til_marie_antoinette_built_an_entire_fake_village/), or so the story goes. She apparently looked very pretty indeed in her outfit. That it was all entirely unsuited to being an actual milkmaid was not something that seemed to trouble her much. ETA: That said, how much truth there is to this is not entirely settled. ---

I visited Versailles just two weeks ago this very day, and indeed I saw her fake village. The story you tell is what the staff at Versailles say, although they made it sound more like she preferred the country aesthetic of it more than role playing. ---

[Here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hameau_de_la_Reine) is a closer look. The cosplay part was an exaggeration but enough people believed it they lopped her head off in 1793. Just sayin’ ---
