Trump rant in Pottersville, MI, on Thursday, August 29. The man is completely unhinged. All this word salad needs is some ranch dressing and cherry tomatoes and it could be a nice lunch. “She” here is of course Kamala Harris. > She destroyed the city of San Francisco. And I own a big building there. It’s no … I shouldn’t talk about this, but that’s OK. I don’t give a damn, because this is what I’m doing. I should say it’s the finest city in the world! Sell and get the hell out of there, but I can’t do that. I don’t care. Billions of dollars. You know, someone said, ‘What do you think you lost?’ I said, ‘Probably two-three billion.’ That’s OK, I don’t care. They said, ‘Do you think you’d do it again?’ And that’s the least of it. Nobody! They always say … I don’t know if you know. Lincoln was horribly treated. Jefferson was pretty horribly. Andrew Jackson, they say, was the worst of all – that he was treated worse than any other president. And I said, ‘Do that study again,’ because I think there’s nobody close to Trump. I even got shot! And who the hell knows where that came from, right? > ---

That’s just it - he’ll never run out of accusations. The faster they’re lobbed at him, the faster he’ll accuse her. Next week he’ll be telling his rallies how Kamala changed her vote on abortion rights in Florida. ---

My best guess is that he’s trying to riff on people who do what you just and refer to her by her first name instead of as Harris (which I find annoying and mildly sexist, but that’s another topic), but it’s all garbled up in his head and is coming out as “nobody knows her last name”. ---

She is appropriately starting to be referred to as “Harris” more often now, but for a long time she was almost always “Kamala” (my neighbor has a 2020 Kamala bumper sticker on their car), so it is possible that someone, somewhere could blank on her last name. When you pay good money and try to build your brand _entirely_ on the back of _your own_ last name, it’s easy to see VP Harris as a nobody. In that narrow, insane regard. Still consistent for Trump: his insecurity plus rank projection. ---

But I admit somewhere along the way I realized it did come off a bit sexist. With Kamala Harris, her first name is more distinct in America, so I think that stands out. But I have made an effort to refer to her as Harris for the same reason. If we refer to candidates by their last names, then be consistent. We could all start referring to the orange guy as “Donald”, in contrast to Kamala. That works on a couple levels. Donald is so hyperfocused on his last name and branding, it would be a harsh dig to stop using it. Yet it doesn’t have the same negative for Kamala. I think @DavidNRockies is on the right track. Donald can’t imagine someone not knowing his last name and who he is by that name. So that’s his idea of a dig - “nobody knows her last name” - the horror! He’s attempting to dismiss her as irrelevant because she’s been VP and still no one recognizes her name. ---

I remember before Justin Trudeau was elected, his opponents kept referring to him as “Justin” in their ads, and it was pointed out that this was meant to sound a little bit infantilizing, even without the sexism aspect.
