Why would he want to make Arpaio the center of attention? These weird ass [del]klan gatherings[/del] rallies exist solely to soothe his infantile need for approval and reassurance. ---

For the sake of the country, hopefully he won’t pardon Arpaio (since I think he very clearly broke the law, in addition to being a vile bigot who has hurt a lot of decent people), but for the sake of the Democratic party, I hope he does – the more of this kind of thing from Trump, the better for the Democrats’ chances of making Hispanic Americans as large and as long-term a Democratic constituency as African Americans. ---

Aren’t pardons pretty much always for people who “very clearly broke the law”? If there had been some “reasonable doubt” as to that question, they should have been acquitted. ---

Sometimes people successfully apply for pardons after reasonable doubt pops up after a conviction, and they land in a limbo where they couldn’t be convicted in a new trial but also don’t have cause to get the conviction overturned. (Joe Arpaio is obviously not in this category, though.) ---

You can say that of many pardons and commutations in history. That’s why they are often left until the end of a presidency. If I had to guess Trump is going to pardon Sheriff Joe but he will probably wait till next month when the sentencing happens. All that will happen is some knashing of teeth and an old man doesn’t go to jail for a couple of weeks. ---

I’m sure they will ask for a delay I the sentence being carried out until appeal but I don’t know if in federal court that will be automatically granted. He already hinted about in today he doesn’t care about burying it. ---

I’m actually less convinced that Trump will do it than I was before the rally. I think he would have done it then if he really wanted to do it. Sheriff Joe can ask Trump’s creditors how it feels to want something from Donald Trump. ---

I would take a dozen free pardons in advance even if I had never done anything wrong rather than spend a day in prison. My good name won’t mean squat in 50 years time.
