> The argument that this pardon was illegal seems like it was invented within the last month or so. It’s like the birthers who ultimately decided that “natural born citizen” means that both parents must have been born in the USA. Nobody thought that before 2008, and I suspect that nobody thought that criminal contempt couldn’t be pardoned before 2017. The _motivation_ is more pure, but the reasoning is not.

then how is trump president? his mother was not born in the usa. he is an unnatural born citizen!

this pardon just caused more eye rolling. good thing i live near wills eye hospital.

The Arizona Central has an article with this headline:

“Joe Arpaio saga isn’t over: Judge to decide if his conviction stands”

That doesn’t sound right to me.

> However, Bolton on Tuesday stopped short of throwing out the conviction based solely on Arpaio’s request. Instead she ordered Arpaio and the U.S. Department of Justice, which is prosecuting the case, to file briefs on why she should or shouldn’t grant Arpaio’s request.

I think what’s happening here is that the judge may decide to let the conviction stand, as a matter of record, even though the pardon renders it moot.

The article also mentions a civil lawsuit being brought by the ACLU.

I think that may be what the fight is about at this point. A conviction probably helps the ACLU’S case.

That’s my understanding as well.
