Eurythmics’ version of the song has a couple of introductory verses I haven’t heard in any other recording. These are in the original song. Most Tin Pan Alley songs of that era had introductory verses that were often dropped in recordings. Doris Day sang the intro in [this recording from 1964](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3dFlLSVeZw). ---

Another reason is that a lot of intros were meant to be sung at a languid, conversational pace. This wouldn’t fit well on a dance band recording, because dancers usually want a constant tempo. Sometimes they would squeeze an instrumental version of the verse into the recording somewhere, without a vocal and without changing tempo. ---
