This is what I, as a gay person, don’t understand about the word “homophobia”. Ten Muslim Countries have the death penalty for homosexuality. Another couple of dozen have various forms of public torture like whipping, prison sentences etc. Hundreds of millions of Muslims in these countries agree with the punishments in Sharia law. 52% of \*\*British Muslims \*\*want to see homosexuality **recriminalized in Britain**. Out of every 1000 immigrants my country, Canada, accepts as refugees or immigrants, how many do you suppose are in favour of applying the death penalty or other penalties to gays? One Muslim immigrant took at gun and murdered some 50 gays in cold blood last year in Orlando. Did the teachings of Islam have nothing to do with this action? Yes, I fully admit that I have a fear of Islam. But am I being irrational when I see Muslims landing in my country? Or is it a normal desire for self-preservation? ---

An example, Maajid Nawaz, an Egyptian Muslim who advocates for a more moderate Islam has been [labelled as an “Islamophobe” by the Islamic Human Rights Commission](http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/charlie-hebdo-murdered-staff-given-islamophobe-of-the-year-award-10100317.html) and an [anti-muslim extremist by the SLPC](https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2016/10/maajid-nawaz-splc-anti-muslim-extremist/505685/). That sort of thing has a chilling effect on efforts to promote reform within Islam so it becomes more tolerant and in line with modern principles. _“It’s out problem, not theirs.”_ Human right violations are not your problem, its our problem.
