I found a program that would do that but I’ve lost its name, can’t find where it resides in my other computer, and can’t find one on line that doesn’t require me to futz around and click stuff, etc. Or that’s free for a week but after that… But the one I have just takes docx files that students send me, for instance, and automatically opens them up as doc files. Any dopers know how I might find that program again? or something similar?

What are you running? There is a free plugin for Office 2003 from MS that reads docx.
My wife has Office 2000 and it seems to work for that also.

A quick google found an [Open Office solution](http://www.oooninja.com/2008/02/office-compatibility-pack-review.html). Warning: I haven’t tried this, since I had to get Office 2007 for another reason.
