I’ll take a crack at that.

Part 1: Gaining Independence From Something:

There are two elements to this. First, you have what was there before. Second, you have what would have been there instead.

Since the land was previously controlled by a colonial power, namely the UK, independence was there for the taking. The main difference when compared to American independence is that the Brits were more than happy to leave.

The Arab nations, particularly Syria, Jordan and Egypt, were the second element. They wanted to control Palestine, and would have if Israel hadn’t asserted itself.

Part 2: Gaining Independence With Something:

The Zionist movement was hardly nothing. The Jewish people who had moved to the area very much wanted a nation of their own there.

Anyway, those are the facts as best as I can remember. Feel free to correct any of the above, since I’m not using any cites.
