It’s a dead dog. Some sort of pit bull or bulldog or something. Blunt-muzzled, barrel-chested. ---

[Here’s an actual palentological zoologist](http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2008/08/the_montauk_monster.php) making a pretty good case for raccoon. (Dog is plausible as well, but he thinks the shape of the forehead and length of the fingers point away from that hypothesis.) ---

When In doubt as to a mammals species, count the number and type of teeth. Raccoon all the way, just waterlogged, and bloated. ---

You can see tufts of grey and brown fur, and a much better view of the skull and teeth. The higher rez shot of hte original is helpful too, look at the whisps of grey hair by the side of its head and the long finger-like toes. A well-built raccoon. If not for the long finger-like toes, I’d say “dog”, but the toes and the shape of the body look much more raccoony. Kind of takes the fun out of guessing now. I was hoping for pages of wild speculation. ---

But I thought the link was worthwhile–it actually gave some explanation as to why a raccoon was a better bet than a dog, which was the other plausible possibility from the first set of pics. ---

[/QUOTE] The feet always bothered me, I thought maybe the pads had just rotted off. But it sure looks like a dog when it’s on the other side. Heck, it looks like a completely different animal when it’s on the other side. I wish when people find dead mysterious creatures that they would put something else in the picture for scale. There was a horsefly in one picture but there’s no standard in horsefly size, some are slightly bigger than a house fly and others are slightly smaller than a horse, so it couldn’t be used as a good judge of size. ---
