I never heard about the colorised original. Damn if I’m not curious.
The Craven production (not directed by him AFAIK) is crap. What the hell was my favorite standup comedian Larry Miller doing in there?!?!?
The B&W original is a freakin gem!
KUDOS to whoever earlier mentioned FIRE MAIDENS FROM OUTER SPACE- my first intro to the music to “Stranger in Paradise”
Has no one mentioned REANIMATOR and BRIDE OF…? If not, here’s the recommendation! I haven’t yet seen BEYOND RE…
In the Lovecraft vein, I also recommend DAGON (basically, SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH), and the Corman production of THE DUNWICH HORROR, starring Dean Stockwell, Sandra Dee, Sam Jaffe, & Ed Begley Sr. Oh- and if it can be found, THE RESURRECTED with Chris Sarandon- based on The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, as was Vincent Price’s The Haunted Palace (which also had Lon Chaney Jr & John Carradine on the side.)
I’m free associating here so I’ll now add Lon Jr’s SPIDER BABY.
An odd Catholic philosophical vampire flick- THE ADDICTION directed by Abel Ferrera. The only horror film I know to quote Calvinist author R.C. Sproul.
Don’t be. Basically, it’s the B&W version, but every time something “unusual” happens, it tints green - the practical upshot of which is to give away the entire goddamn plot of the film.
Would you mind spoiling this movie for me (in a spoiler box, naturally)? Specifically these first 5 minutes and the ending? I’m never going to watch it, but I am compelled to know.
I really hate to do this, as the first 5 minutes are…well, very surprising. So if anyone reading this thinks they even MIGHT someday see the film, PLEASE don’t read the following spoiler!!! It will ruin the screaming fun on your part!
It has been a few years since I saw it, but here is my memory of it. Even before the credits start, the film seems to jump into a scene of a sweet little old lady attending some sort of uplifting cult seminar in a hotel ballroom. Afterwards, a hippy-type chick and her odd boyfriend ask if they can get a ride and the sweet old lady says, “sure”. Next you see her driving down the road chatting happily away about the uplifting message, and in the back seat you see the guy making motions to his girlfriend and you are sure they are going to kill this old woman and steal her car. Suddenly, the car stalls in the middle of the woods. The old woman tries to start the car and says this happens a lot. She keeps trying to re-start the car. You watch as the girl in the back says no but the hippy dude suddenly lunges forward and…turns off the radio. Just as you are about to laugh, two inbred looking guys open the backseat doors, grab the girl and the dude, take them out of the car and strangle them to death with wire. The sweet old lady claps and says, "thank you boys! What a wonderful Mother’s Day gift! …and then the credits start and the film begins…
