True confessions time: My mom loved a bargain. When my daughter and I visited her in California and we went to the grocery store, the two of them would disappear as I was checking the shopping list. I knew where they were: at the clearance rack, poking through discontinued denture cleaner and unpopular cat food flavors to find what Mom called ā€œtreasures.ā€ That isnā€™t the confession part. The confession part is that I spent extra time roaming around the supermarket yesterday because I was on the phone with my sister and found a huge clearance rackā€¦and was thrilled. I bypassed the canned ā€œcucumbers in brineā€ from Israel. Arenā€™t those pickles? Why wouldnā€™t you _call_ them pickles? (They were not brine-fermented. The brine had garlic and seasonings.) And why in a can, not a jar? I also passed on bubble-gum-scented hair gel. But I got a huge jar of peanut butter (and I live alone and seldom eat PB), some containers with Christmas trees on 'em, and a pink, lacy ā€œsleep cap.ā€ The latter was 90Ā¢ and for a photo of me in it to make my sister smile. **swampy** , you sound like youā€™re all better. šŸ™‚ **shoe** , glad youā€™re surviving. Take one Monkey every 4 minutes until better. Hope the gel caps help. **Taters** , have fun with Zoe. She sounds adorable. **flyboy** , I didnā€™t hear about the accident. Thatā€™s terrible. Sitting here shaking my head. In the thread asking for fridge advice, I was the first response, to recommend using a vacuum on the coils. Three posts later, someone else made the same recommendation. Guess who got acknowledged and thanked?? šŸ˜› Iā€™m proud of myself for not snarking in that threadā€¦ Lunch was OK. **FCD** said his meal didnā€™t taste seasoned at all - dunno if it was him or the meal. Mine seemed to be more rice and less shrimp and zucchini than usual. Whatever - I didnā€™t have to cook or clean up. When we got home, we moved the small fridge and a little table from the shop to the basement, then I drove olā€™ John Deere around the back yard, since it was getting out of control and weā€™re threatened with 2 or 3 days of rain. So thatā€™s done. Iā€™m about to haul some sodas and a bottle of juice down to the basement fridge. I think I may install a shelf or small cabinet for Roxy snacks. Not today, but eventually. But now, chillage shall ensue. ---

Afternoon all (just looked and itā€™s 2:30pm hereā€”where the heck did the day go?). Did get out to the Wall of Mart and did some shopping, then took advantage of being out and got my hair cut, then came back home and booked my mini-vacation (down to Vicksburg for Civil War and Casinos, then to Corinth because Iā€™ve never been there, then to Clarksburg (not on the last train, but via Shiloh and Fort Donelsonā€“bit of a Civil War fan hereā€“and finally via Nashville (hope to meetup with **Wizard** and **Red** ) and on home to N. Ali-Bama. Not a major trip, just 4 nights out, but it will get me moving around again. As for July, I have an idea, but Iā€™ll need a roomie for itā€¦ Just poured rain here for about 30 minutes, now the skies are beginning to clear, hopefully with a cooler temperature. **FCM** , isnā€™t it always the first responder seems to never be the one thanked? Some folks just scroll up to the first answer and stop. **nellie** , I donā€™t remember seeing a clearance rack in the local stores, but Iā€™d probably browse itā€¦and my Mom, rest her soul, would definitely be there. **flyboy** , glad you werenā€™t involved in the accident, and the lady deserves the fine IMHO. **Cookie** , congrats on the friendā€™s sit-down. Mine took us kids to every sidewalk sale (Whatever happened to those? Malls, I guess.), Moonlight Madness, and clearance sale in the Chicago area. We loved it. I posted this on FB, but Iā€™ll share it here, too. So far this afternoon, Iā€™ve gotten THREE calls from ā€œAmazonā€ saying purchases in excess of $300 were charged to my card, and if I didnā€™t make these purchases, I should call and let them know. All 3 calls originated in the 803 area code, but the number Iā€™m supposed to call to report was a different area code. Plus I have my VISA set up to alert me if any online charges are made - surprise - no alerts! So, obviously, scam-a-rama. I know youā€™re all too smart to fall for this crap, but you might want to alert any naive friends or relatives. A quick google showed this is a known and ongoing scam. Youā€™re welcome! šŸ¤£ ---

The mailbox has been loose forever. Last weekend, I noticed it no longer would stay put when I levelled it out. Since irk is slow and Iā€™m irking from home, I went out and pulled out the four roofing nails that held the metal box to the wooden base. I took off the base to find that whoever installed the mailbox 30 years ago used a bunch of galvanised 3-inch finishing nails to secure the base to the post. I hammered them out and secured the base to the post with five 3-inch screws. I have a bunch of self-tapping screws Iā€™d bought when SWMBO wanted to attach a seat to a chair several years ago. I used those to attach the box to the base. When I have to take the box off again, it will be easier than pulling rusty nails out with Vice Grips. ---

The _tangzhong_ really helps make for a lighter-than-air bun. **Brioche Buns** Tangzhong: 2 tablespoons (20g) bread flour 2 tablespoons (27g) water 4 tablespoons (60g) whole milk Dough: 1/2 cup(120g) whole milk @ 95f (30c) 1 tablespoon (9g) instant yeast (1.25 tbsp active dry yeast) 2.5 cups (320g) Bread flour 1 teaspoon (7g) fine sea salt 2.5 tablespoons (35g) granulated sugar 1 whole egg and 1 egg yolk 3 tablespoons (42g) unsalted butter, softened Egg wash: 1 whole egg, splash of whole milk For the tangzhong: Whisk flour, water and milk together in a small pan. Heat for about 30 seconds until a paste forms. Remove from heat and cool completely. For the dough: Heat Ā½ cup of milk to about 100F, add yeast and a teaspoon of sugar. Set aside for about 5 minutes. Whisk together flour, sugar and salt in mixer bowl. Add the butter and work it in with your fingers. Add the yeast mixture and the tangzhong paste. Add one egg and one egg yolk and mix on medium with dough hook for 5-8 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Grease a glass bowl. Form the dough into a smooth ball and place in bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours. Punch down. Lightly flour a work surface. Divide the dough into 6 pieces, approximately 95-105g each. Place balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment and let raise for 1-2 hours. Heat oven to 375F. Brush the rolls with egg wash and bake for 16-18 minutes. When browned, brush with melted butter. ---

Evening all. Big Bowl Oā€™Sallit has been consumed so stomach is happy. Got the hard copy of Volume 16 of the webcomic _Schlock Mercenary_ along with a 5-book holder to put my volumes in. Now just have to be patient for the last 4 volumesā€¦ **FCM** , my phone has been busy too, mostly trying to get me to take a DNA test for Medicare (itā€™s a scam) or sell my house. The Amazon billing was last weekā€™s effort. **shoe** , just counted again and I have 36 rolls in my spare bathroom, so if it gets criticalā€¦I canā€™t do a damn thing about it, but I have plenty to spareā€¦ šŸ˜† Rain is gone and itā€™s still 78F outside, so the heat hasnā€™t departed yet. Internettinā€™ and eating celery hearts right now, which should keep me occupied until near bedtime. All yā€™all have a good night tonight. ---
