It is wise to scoff at preppers? Are their fears really so outlandish?

Interesting. Sometimes, I worry about things a bit (I’m good at worry). I think I should have a cache of stuff around here for “just in case”. Not “just in case the Ruskies attack” more like “Just in case we lose power for a week or two” (Two members of my family have been rousted from their homes due to tornadoes.)

What goes in these “couple of totes”? (And how do i store water in a way that it’s stays potable?).

Well said Lemur866.

But.

Many of the folks in NOLA had no place to go, even if they had a car with gas and the GOV said they would be taken care of.

Those leaving got stuck in traffic, which also prevented aid coming in.

Now, I know many people live day to day. But A week of food and water is not that expensive to stock up on. Water being hardest to store because of how much you really need.

I’m lucky in that the very worst would be one hell of a snow storm. But we have shelter, water (a spring) and always a couple of weeks of food. No doubt being without electricity would suck, that’s why you sleep when it’s dark out.

Might be a lot of noodles and beans, but we won’t starve.

Given the easy availability of scrap aluminum, steel & iron, I suspect the post-apocolyptic economy to not rely on gold & silver. Four generations down the road, maybe, when the scrap is used up and we’re digging again, but for a long time it’ll be salvage ruling all.

Yep, I’m guessing that we wouldn’t be pounding our gold coins into cups for drinking for a long time.

Well said, but, wrong.
At least, I think. I want to find out which preppers have been shooting people who put a foot on the prepper’s homestead. I can’t think of any. (I think it is unfair to bring up the John Travolta/Halloween thing.)
A few cites would help clear this up.
