oh and get used to wind tunnel days like today with winds of 30 mph and gusts of 40- 60 … and since its trash day in this side of town its one hell of a mess
Sorry I’m just now getting back to this. I haven’t been able to use my computer, and using the quote function on my phone is maddening. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to reply, and this has been really helpful.
We will definitely have central air. If we end up with a rehab project, we’ll install it ourselves. I’m from Arkansas. When we moved up to Maine and no one had central air, I was genuinely shocked. This actually sounds like a much bigger town area than we’re used to, so that will be a nice change of pace. Plus, of course, LA.
We have a 4-wheeler, and my husband has a dirt bike, but plans to upgrade to a better one out there. We’re into that kind of thing, so that will be fun.
All of this sounds great, thank you.
Meh. I can’t say I find deserts particularly alluring, but it’s a temporary move, so I’ll survive.
Very cool, thanks.
That sounds great, but it looks like it would be a 55 mile commute for my husband, I don’t think we want to commit to that.
 Well, we’re both excellent swimmers.
Yeah, no. I didn’t know that. I guess I’m not sure if it matters? Like, if there is a major earthquake, does it matter if you’re on the line or 15 miles away from it? I guess building codes will likely be pretty strict, but people do seem to live out there.
Seems like kind of a problem for all the people out riding dirt bikes in the desert.
Wow! I’m used to driving around out there, although it’s been a few years. I’d WAGged it about 30 miles. Should’ve checked the map. Sorry to suggest something so impractical.
If the desert is a wee bit too much there’s very nice living to be had in the mountains just S and E of Palmdale. You can have alpine with light snow, blazing desert, or anything in between just by choosing your elevation.
A question for the locals: the OP says she has dogs. Are coyotes a problem in Palmdale? Other wildlife? If so, what do you recommend for protecting the dogs?
Oh, no problem! He’s done long commutes before, but it has to be for a good reason. We will check out the SE area. We’re definitely not city people.
Where we currently live, coyotes are a problem. A couple of days ago there was a big one just chilling under a tree maybe 30 ft from our house. I had to chase him off with a stick. We hear them all the time out here. Two of the dogs are small enough to be coyote food, and I keep a close eye on them. Im actually more worried about rattle snakes out there. Seems like they’d be harder to keep out of a yard.
We have coyotes even here in Burbank, I can only imagine they are worse in Palmdale.
What’s the couger situation out there?
If your talking about the big cats, every now and then we’ll here about one. But not very often.
If you are talking about middle aged single women on the prowl, that’s more of what Orange County down south is known for.
Surprisingly, a friend of ours out near Kansas City had a yearling horse killed recently by what the wildlife people think was a cougar. I’ve never been too concerned. What about rattle snakes?
There are definitely rattlesnakes in the hills around LA. Hiking trails have rattlesnake warnings posted.
