My (ex?) boyfriend doesn’t realize that my job sometimes requires me to go above and beyond what he might consider the reasonable amount of time / effort. I’m the only one who can perform certain functions. There’s been an 8-figure deal that’s been in the pipeline for months, and has been somewhat challenging, due to inherent complexities, the number of parties involved, etc. Meanwhile, we have had to push back the deadline multiple occasions, to the point where my boss just wants the deal finalized ASAP. I received an e-mail on 8:30 Sunday morning, asking me to generate and produce certain paperwork. I instantly respond, stating that I needed other parties to send me information before I could go forward. Knowing that one of the parties wanted to sign that day, I knew I would need to have access to a computer as soon as I got the information I needed. I told him that I was not sure if I would be able to do anything that day, as this deal was to be my top priority. He states that he doesn’t know why I have to work on a Sunday, that I don’t make time for him, etc. I have repeatedly told him that there is little (if any) redundancy in my job, so if I’m not available to work on something, 99% of the time, things just won’t get done. (My boss _can_ do some of what I do, but he is on a series of business trips for the next three weeks, and he’s overworked as it is) The boyfriend has a job where the hours are very rigid and set. I don’t have that luxury. Also, working with people in different timezones, sometimes I don’t get “busy” until the end of the day. He says he wants to be with someone who makes him a priority (which he is entitled to), but I feel like his expectations of what I should and shouldn’t do professionally, are unrealistic. ---

It’s nothing personal, but if you keep it up I AM going to reactivate that Tinder profile and find someone who doesn’t lay the guilt on. ---

My cat has a cold. In addition to laryngitis (silent meows are somehow hilarious) and constant sneezing, he also has goopy eyes. And, like many males I know, when he’s sick he becomes extremely needy and clingy- he’s been spending all night every night literally trying to sleep in my arms or at least as close to me as possible. This morning I woke up with his goopy eye pressed right up against my eye. UUUGGGGHHH!!! That’s disgusting but I’m hoping not contagious. ---

My problem with this teacher (based on what we know), is they’re dealing with already marginalized groups. Maybe they’re completely impartial with dealing with the class and treats everyone equally. Or maybe they let their biases get in the way of classroom management. The fact that they’re stupid enough to say what they did at work shows they don’t have the best judgment. And like I said, I’ve never known anyone to ask that (non-ironically) and not say stupid stuff later, like “Why is there a Black Entertainment channel and not a white entertainment?” or “Why can Black people say the ‘N’ word? If anything, that’s the racist thing.” Either way, I’d pull my kid out of that class if I heard about it. ---

If I heard someone say something like that, I, too, would think it likely that that there were racist, or at least problematic, attitudes behind it. But to fire someone for saying something that is not even racist _per se_, if that’s the only offense, is too much like prosecuting thought crimes. But it’s likely that that wasn’t the only offense. What may have happened is that she was asked by a supervisor to explain what she “meant by that,” and that the explanation she gave was what sealed her fate. When it looks to an outsider like a person was “fired for doing X,” there may actually be more to the story. ---

My son has some dread virus today that gave him a very high fever and has him coughing up snot like a 9-year old loogie machine. I took him to the doc and she prescribed pretty much what I’m doing: lots of fluids, ibuprofen and cold stuff to soothe his throat. What sucks is that I’m annoyed and I feel guilty because I’m annoyed. I was supposed to be on a really important call today with the government to tell them why one of their new pieces of legislation sucked. Then I was supposed to spend the remainder of the day in an audit, also with the U.S. government. Granted, someone from my workplace was able to do both for me, but still…it wasn’t me. I’m not mad at him obviously, but both my kids seem to have this unique sense for Important Meeting at Work and/or Business Trip = Perfect Time to Get Incredibly Sick. My husband would be helping with backup but his car was rear ended last week and he has to take it in to get estimates for damages. Stupid virus. You couldn’t have waited a week? Damned messy life - shit happens. I hate that. Grrr. ---
