Congratulations! You’ll have a wonderful time, girls are great & their clothes rock. Algernina Congratulations, btw. We were also hoping for a boy for our second child (we already had another boy and wanted a same sex pair to make things easier). I can tell you, when you get to hold them for the first time, disappointment will be the very last thing on your mind. ---

Kaylee Ivy S. Then she’ll have kisses all her life 🙂 Yay on the good news. The only thing I have to say is don’t give her an “old” name like Esther or Sylvia or Euphengenia. And for Og’s sake, _anything_ but Tiffany, Brittany, Lindsay, or any other of the female teen stars of the last 10 years ---

I was lobbying for Sam, after Vimes of course :D, but Spouse stood by his “no Bible” decision. I changed my name after marriage, my new initials are KSS. Maybe the Universe is trying to tell me something: Keep it Simple, Stupid! ---

And the whole initials thing seems a silly worry to me. ---

Never, never, never, never pick a name in the top ten, and avoid top forty if at all possible. “Emily” has been the #1 girls’ name for a few years now. It’s an AWFUL name choice now, because any girl saddled with it will be doomed to be “Emily-Lastinitial” in school forever, a kid saddled with a dated name. Mouse, pick a nice, feminine, normally spelled girls’ name that isn’t in the top 50 and doesn’t sound old or ugly or is related to a popular movie or TV show (e.g. Madison, Trinity, Emma.) From the list of Top 100 names, some low-on-the-list choices might be Madeline, Rebecca, Jocelyn, or Claire. “Heather” is very nice. “Ivy” is a bit silly, and “Kaylee” won’t age well; an 11-year old can be Kaylee, but it looks immature on a 34-year-old businesswoman. “Brigid” is ugly and unfeminine. ---

And another vote for ‘girls rock - Do Not Fear The Pink’ (apart from the Barbie Aisle in ToysRUs :shudder: - have you SEEN that place? You will…) Aspidistra, proud mum of: Number 1 Girl (interests: riding her bike,climbing things,jigsaw puzzles, books, driving her parents crazy) and Number 2 Girl (interests: standing on her head,trying to ride her sister’s bike,climbing things, driving her parents crazy), both of whom think of ‘clothes’ as ‘something your parents put on you before they let you go outside and play’ ---

Congrats! I’ll offer up my own name, Cassandra. I only knew one other girl in High School with my name (we both went by Cassie and were in different years, so we weren’t in the same class). It wasn’t until this week, when I was in a workshop with people of all different ages, that I was one of 3 (!) Cassandras in the same room. (My extended family didn’t like my name at first, as I was named after a Great-Aunt who was a royal bitch when she was alive. I’m not so hated.) ---

My first thought when she was born was, “Ew! Old person name!” She’s such a cutie though that now when I hear the name I think of a rosy cheeked little girl. I was another one who was mildly disappointed to discover the vicious kicking lump I was carrying around was a girl. I thought a boy would be, well, easier. (I didn’t have a great relationship with my mom) I’m also afraid of dolls. They seriously creep me out. But my little Cricket is the most wonderful creature ever. And with a girl you get twice as many clothes to choose from. The girl stuff is too pink? Go get cool lion and tiger stuff from the boy’s side! ---

May I respectfully direct you to [What not to name your baby](http://notwithoutmyhandbag.com/babynames/), for negative advice and a really good laugh. My husband set the ground rules of: Nothing polysyllabic from the first testament of the Bible (I should never have told him I favoured the names Jedediah and Ezekial) No natural objects (Fern, Syke, Phoenix etc) because they will ALL clash with his family name. No virtue names (Faith, Chastity, Grace) 'cos the person is always the opposite of their virtue name. I managed to sneak a sort-of virtue name under his radar. Our daughter’s middle name is Blythe.
