Five days into fatherhood, and I can’t believe how much I love this tiny little bundle. If there’s one sound that always cut right through me, it was a screaming baby. This one turns on the siren, and it’s musical to me. I had no idea _how_ I was going to get through the trauma of changing a diaper. Now I realize that when it’s your own baby, it’s nothing. I must spend a good three or four hours each day just staring at this helpless little lump who depends upon my wife and I for everything in her world, and all I can think is that from here on out, it’s all for her. Everything I do. Shayla sleeps probably 18 hours a day, so there’s ample napping time (yes, everyone, I know this will change before too long). If you can swing it, save as much vacation time as possible. She was in the “Special Care” nursery – not their standard nursery, but not a NICU either. She was born with a 102 fever, so she had to spend a few days in there getting antibiotics and such. By Wednesday, she was fully cleared and was able to join us in the hospital room.
