Every time there is a storm leaving behind over a foot of snow on the East Coast, the headlines call it “The blizzard of 20xx!” A blizzard is a snowstorm characterized by high winds and low visibility. There has to be three hours or more of sustained winds of 35+ mph plus visibility of a quarter mile or less. The amount of snow has bugger all to do with it. You can have a blizzard with three inches of snow. When I see these headlines I get so mad that I go nuts and fire off letters to the editor and call the offending TV stations and come to the SDMB and make a post or twelve about what idiots the media are. Oh, wait, no I don’t. I shrug it off and move on with my life. I’m sure if I bothered to look that I could find headlines calling the four inches of windless snow falling in the South right now “The blizzard of January 2013!” ---

A quick couple of questions to the OP, if he’s still participating: Do live near Detroit, and did you call in to 97.1 (The Ticket) this morning with the exact same point about magazines vs. clips? I read your OP, and it is nearly verbatim to what a caller said on the Stony and Bill show this morning. ---

It may be a bit pedantic but my point was, aside from just being irritated, if people want to “ban” something, they should at least somewhat educate themselves about what they want to ban. It doesn’t matter what. You (the general you) just look like a fucking idiot when you make pronouncements and try to assume an air of authority when you don’t know shit except that it is “scary”. You all know my views on the gun thing but I was just hoping to dispel some ignorance. And yes I did throw a few zings but it is the fucking Pit. So now when you wacko lefty anti-gun nuts go to your tree hugging love-ins, you can tell your Comrades “It’s a fucking magazine not a clip!” 😉 ---

Magazine can be the ammo container that directly charges the weapon (meaning a clip,) or it could be the area where you store ammunition. I find the word ‘clip’ to be better for automatic guns. ---

I agree that a lot of reporters are idiots, no argument there. And I agree that if you lobby to ban something you you should be educated about it. But still your point is pedantic to the level of nonsense. If you were arguing that someone was referring to a pump action firearm as a gas fed firearm you would have a point. The people you are targeting are “somewhat” educated. They understand that there is a detachable container that holds ammunition that can be interchanged with another one to facilitate rapid reloading. It has been shown in this thread that some dictionaries conflate the two terms. Being pedantic over terminology of a thing that someone understands the function of is not making some grand point. ---
