I do think the “garand clang” = doom for the shooter thing is a myth. Both for the reasons already presented and that no effort ever made during production to muffle the clang. By contrast for the problem with the rear sights was reckonized and fixed in the course of production (although the first fix caused it’s own problems which weren’t solved until after WWII). Someone claimed it happened though that he was basically on a one on one dual with a hidden soldier in the early days of Vietnam. He fired seven times and threw an empty clip in the air. The enemy came out of hiding and charged and got bullet #8 in his brain. Still that was probably an exception. If I were being shot at I’d probably be thinking more about shooting back or hiding as opposed to theatrics. I just a few minutes tossing empty Garand clips at my rifle while holding it. Trying to hold the rifle in ready postion while bouncing a clip off it (to make it clang, which didn’t sound exactly like when a clip was ejected but was probably close enough) and having it bounce in about the right direction was doable but not easy. If you’ve never held one, a Garand is long and heavy. ---

Funny (sort of) scenario. Crazed gunman walks into mall, starts shooting, runs out of bullets. A shopper screams at a armed security guard, “He’s putting in a new clip!” Armed security guard yells back " As long as it’s not a new magazine, we’ll be okay! Wow, I guess you’re right, ignorance about this two words is dangerous huh? ---
