To my fellow gun people, apologies I am trying to make this simple for those here that know nothing(no offense) about guns.

A primer on magazines and clips:

To get right to it, the "Eeevil “Assault Weapons” like the semi-automatic AR15 have what is called a detachable box magazine. You all know what they look like. This is a removable unit and it has a spring at the bottom. The spring allows the next round to pop up into the chamber after a round is fired. After the last round is fired a button or lever allows the mag to be removed for reloading.

Generally they are reloaded by hand. You pick up rounds and press them into the magazine one by one until all 30 rounds, I mean 7 are loaded. And it gets harder and harder to press them in the fuller it gets.

Then you pop the mag back into the rifle. Most semi-auto pistols also work like this. There is a handy thing called a stripper clip that allows more rapid reloading to magazines like that and can only be used when the mag is detached from the weapon. It is basically a unit that holds rounds and you can slide it into the mag and pull it out. It strips the rounds into the mag all at once. Just easier than doing it by hand.

Now to the “clip”

Many rifles (and shotguns) have internal magazines. You don’t pop it out and reload it. They load the same way. You press rounds into them like the detachable ones and some load from the top of the rifle and some from the bottom.

Although rifles used it before, to me, the classic rifle that used a clip was the M1 Garand, the standard US battle rifle in WW2. It used an 8 round CLIP. Inserted from the top of the rifle, the clip allowed 8 rounds at once to be inserted into the magazine instead of trying to jam each one in by hand. Pretty cool for an infantryman. It was a steel strip that held the rounds and once you loaded it into the rifle it stayed in the magazine until empty and then ejected with a distinctive metallic “ping” sound.

Don’t know if it’s an urban legend that the M1 ping let the enemy know they were empty.

Every time there is a storm leaving behind over a foot of snow on the East Coast, the headlines call it “The blizzard of 20xx!”

A blizzard is a snowstorm characterized by high winds and low visibility. There has to be three hours or more of sustained winds of 35+ mph plus visibility of a quarter mile or less. The amount of snow has bugger all to do with it. You can have a blizzard with three inches of snow.

When I see these headlines I get so mad that I go nuts and fire off letters to the editor and call the offending TV stations and come to the SDMB and make a post or twelve about what idiots the media are. Oh, wait, no I don’t. I shrug it off and move on with my life.

I’m sure if I bothered to look that I could find headlines calling the four inches of windless snow falling in the South right now “The blizzard of January 2013!”

Magazine can be the ammo container that directly charges the weapon (meaning a clip,) or it could be the area where you store ammunition. I find the word ‘clip’ to be better for automatic guns.

But still your point is pedantic to the level of nonsense. If you were arguing that someone was referring to a pump action firearm as a gas fed firearm you would have a point. The people you are targeting are “somewhat” educated. They understand that there is a detachable container that holds ammunition that can be interchanged with another one to facilitate rapid reloading. It has been shown in this thread that some dictionaries conflate the two terms. Being pedantic over terminology of a thing that someone understands the function of is not making some grand point.
