I know people hate this, but: **Com2Kid** : :rolleyes: It can certainly be argued that pleasure is what keeps us going. Pleasure in having warmth at all times (and in cooked meat/veggies) brought about the continued use of fire. And so forth. If sex wasn’t pleasurable, we’d either reproduce by budding or we’d have died off much earlier (note: I believe the latter, not the former). If there wasn’t _some_thing pleasurable about bringing children into the world women would refuse to do it because of the pain involved. And so on. ---

So you won’t object to me invoking the SDMB’s magic word, then? Cite? You’re throwing around these terms without even attempting to define them or establish a scientific basis for them. What is an “evolutionary scale”? What is “short term” in this context? What are the “negative side effects” and can you demonstrate that they do have a “serious potential” (whatever that is exactly)? Unless you can answer these questions (and those that will no doubt follow) adequately, you’re going to appear to be using pseudo-science to justify your own preconceptions. Do you mean that some motavations are inherently better in continueing a species regardless of situation, and that there is a ranking of these motavations? I’d like to see that backed up by some actual research. Or do you mean that evolution strives to impart humans with some motaviations that it percieves as better than others? Uhh… Well, that would be an interesting take on things, but it strikes me as somewhat divergent from reality. ---

Evolution is NOT forward looking, it concerns the here and the now. Something changes and what was once great evolutionary practice can easily start to suck. And last time I checked our species has had MAJOR changes go on in it. There was that whole entire industrial revolution thingy not to long ago, and before that there was the introduction of algriculture and so on. ---

Well, I’m not going to hijack this thread by discussing **Com2Kid** gross misunderstanding of evolutioanry biology, so I’’’ confine myself to a few quick commments. 1. Sex for pleasure is an innate urge. I refer you the many instances of copulation in the animal kingdom, where the institution of marraige is unknown. 2. Adults have the right to do with their bodies what they will. 3. Gay men are intimately familar with the safer sex rules, much more so than the majority of heteros. 4. To warn gay men about safer sex is presumptuous, a) because you are assuming a privilege of intimacy or authority you don’t possess, b)because you know less about safer sex than most gay men do, so you are presuming to teach where you should learn, and c) it’s none of your damn business.
