For what it’s worth, it’s only been two years since I took a psych class, and I seem to recall that **woodstockbirdybird** ’s definition of cognitive dissonance is closer to what’s generally accepted. FWIW. ---

FWIW. \*\* Well, I think it’s both. The first step is that tension arises because newly obtained information conflicts with previous beliefs. This is the dissonance part. But this leads the person experiencing cognitive dissonance to attempt to reduce this tension by any of a number of mechanisms, including rationalizing their apparently illogical behavior. There’s a Dilbert cartoon that summarizes it pretty well. I’m going to butcher it a lot, but it goes something like this: 1. Dilbert sitting in his cube thinking, “I hate this job.” 2. Dilbert realizes that he could make more money working for the competitor. 3. Dogbert tells him, “Only an idiot would work at a job that pays less money unless they really loved their job.” 4. Dilbert sitting in his cube thinking, “I love this job.” ---
