Having a large ego isn’t a necessary qualification for being the master of a large cruise vessel but it’s a role that has a slight tendency to select for that trait.
Of course, having that trait also tends to be associated with doing dumb arrogant shit.
Marine pilots tend to be the same. A professional acquaintance of mine used to be widely regarded as the most intelligent knowledgeable and able marine pilot in his field, and for having an ego to match. He once did something in front of me that was utterly against the rules. He saw the look in my eyes and said disdainfully “I know what I’m doing”
