Thanks everyone, you’re all so kind! In fact, I have a 3 month holiday now- my job starts at the end of July ( **Pushkin** , I’ll be in Belfast for my first year and Antrim/Magherafelt for my second year, who knows where after that). The last few days have been a bit of a blur of parties, receptions, class photographs, hangovers and shopping. I suspect the next few weeks will be mostly housework (which I’ve negleted during the studying) and daytime TV! Irishfella and I are off to the Algarve on Thursday for a week of lying by a pool, reading trashy novels and doing nothing. Some of my friends are going to walk the Inca trail, or backpack through Cambodia and Laos, but I wanted something a little more relaxing! Anyway, in the end the exams weren’t as horrible as I thought they would be, and I got lovely patients who co-operated and talked me up to the examiners! Anyone considering this as a career- as long as you go into it knowing that it’s hard work, no sleep, bad money for the first 10 years, piles of stress and lots of pressure, you’ll be fine! The thing they don’t tell you is that nobody junior is ever on their own. You always have people to ask for help, and the first rule of medicine is “If you don’t know, ask”, which makes a much safer doctor than someone who doesn’t know, but has a guess and tries to muddle through anyway! Oh, and don’t believe them when they say you need to know lots of physics and maths- basic statistics and being able to plug numbers into equations will get you 90% of the way there, the rest is for radiologists! ---
