**A Charlie Brown Christmas** wins hands down. Its’ anti-commercialism message coupled with a rough-around-the-edges animation look has endeared it to audiences for decades; a true moldbreaker. **Great Pumpkin** falls a distant second and every other Peanuts animated special is regrettable to say the least. ---

I can’t really say that one is better than the other. Neither one is meant to be the same. But I can say that A Charlie Brown Christmas is, hands down, the best Christmas special ever made. Not even How the Grinch Stole Christmas gets specific as to _why_ we have Christmas in the first place. I once had the chance to read the second chapter of Luke in church, and in King James version too. I did not succumb, although I was mightily tempted at the end of it to say, instead of the usual “_The word of the Lord_” , " _and that’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown_" I didn’t, but I wanted to. I love the Grinch, Rudolph, Frosty and so on. But Charlie Brown will never be topped in it’s category. ---

Yeah, but _Pumpkin_ has a beloved cartoon icon hiding in a bombed-out farmhouse to avoid the Boches while he makes his way back friendly lines to the western front! (Y’know, as a little kid, the blending of fantasy and reality in that part did kinda confuse me a bit. I think I got that Snoopy wasn’t really flying, but what was with all the ruins and German artillery in the suburbs? Wouldn’t the gang run into that when they were trick or treating? :smack: 😃 ) ---

Great lines from from **The Great Pumpkin**. . . Linus, “Charlie, you’ve heard about fury and the woman scorned, haven’t you?” Charlie, “Yes, I guess I have.” Or Sally: I demand restitution!!! I like the great pumpkin as much as the Christmas one. I really enjoy the trippy side bars. ---

Let’s compare: anti commercialism in CB Christmas vrs the Anti Santa message in the Great Pumpkin… Poor old Chuck only gets rocks vrs He gets no Christmas cards Great Music (just try to get the Christmas time music out of your head now) Vrs Schroder playing old WWI songs for Snoopy. Red Baron vrs the Best decorated house contest Linus’s letter to the Great Pumpkin vrs Sally’s letter to Santa. (10’s and 20’s) Gotta go with A Charlie Brown Christmas. By the way has there been a decent children’s Christmas special in the last 20 years? ---
