There’s a radio station here in town that starts to play Christmas music All Saints’ Day (1 November). Yeesh. I’m always amazed at all the really bad country Christmas music that’s floating around, but I shouldn’t be surprised. Christmas music sells and it gets played every year, and modern Nashville country is so cynically focus-grouped and marketed that of course they will want to print money. I was watching Collegium Vocale Gent perform J.S. Bach’s _Christmas Oratorio_ last night, and it was very good, but it occurred to me that Bach was punching a clock when he wrote that, too. In the late '90’s and early '00’s, I worked at Burger King and Walmart. Back then, there was actual Christmas music played non-stop. These days, at least the monotony and painfulness of Christmas music is lightened by all the places who play modern garbage – evidently having fallen under the ludicrous impression that the stuff written recently has anything to do with either Christmas or music. In reality, of course, there hasn’t been any actual Christmas music written in the last 20-25 years. ---

You could be right about that time estimate. It’s been twenty SIX years since Jorma Kaukonen released his Christmas record. Now if they played that one in the stores, I wouldn’t mind so much.
