**whiterabbit** is a little person, and she’s had an [“Ask the…” thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=449350). In that thread, she said:

> [@](#):

> Midget has fallen out of use. I know, it used to be proportional=midget, non-proportional=dwarf. This started in the 1800s, interestingly, in the entertainment world (think circuses). These days it’s generally (I don’t speak for all, I’m sure, but for a large (shut up!) majority it’s considered an insult, sometimes on par with “nigger.” Please, please, please don’t use it unless you are absolutely sure it’s okay with the person in question. I’ve seen a few too many midget jokes even here on the Dope, and I have to say, it really bothers me.

Human growth hormone is now given to nearly all people who were described as “midgets” - people who just stopped growing and remained child-sized. Dinklage has the most common form of dwarfism, with average-size trunk with shorter than average limbs.

Take away the “sorta.” I saw him in an off-Broadway play. Play was pretty meh but he was terrific and yep, totally hot.

The original was great. I don’t know what the point is in re-making it.

> As amazed as I was that anyone would remake a film that is A) in English already, and B) less than 3 years old, my biggest surprise was seeing the most recent trailer for the new version of the film. For anyone who hasn’t seen it, I’ll put this in a spoiler box, but the trailer actually flat-out explains that Peter Dinklage’s character…

> was having an affair with the now-deceased father of Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence, who’s funeral the film is based around.
>
> Seriously? How could they blow that in the trailer? Kind of a big plot point that’s _supposed_ to be a secret.

They gave away the same plot point in the ads for the original version, which I still watched, and kind of liked. Especially Peter Dinklange, who I’ve had a kind of crush on since “The Station Agent”.

Damnit. That’s what I came in here to say.

I liked the original pretty well (though the scatological stuff went from funny, through transgressively funny, and right on to just ick). The new version looks just dreadful, not because it’s a black version, not because it has certain actors in it, and not even because it’s an unnecessary remake of a recent movie. It’s that the “jokes” used in the trailer are painfully pathetic, and these days they usually throw in the best bits for the trailer.

Anyway, I love Peter Dinklage. I’m really looking forward to seeing him as Tyrion Lannister. And for no good reason other than it’s awesome, here’s a NSFW [video](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4je71Tz_9IE&feature=related)from _Living in Oblivion_ featuring him.

Did they really?!? I’m pretty well used to the idea of trailers using all the funniest lines of a not-very-good comedy or all the “scariest” quotes from a not-particularly-scary horror film, but I can’t see how anyone would OK giving away the most important/shocking/completely unexpected plot twist in a film that’s actually good.

I knew without reading anything other than the title, that you must be talking about Death at a Funeral. I _died_ laughing during the original. But the new one is either:

1. Really bad
2. Really good but the trailer was inept
3. Really good but I just don’t get black humor
4. Really good but the trailer was inept but I still won’t enjoy it because I saw the original and the new one adds nothing new except black people
