It pointed out what a difficult time the Europeans had trying to conquor central Africa, as for the first time they encountered diseases that they had no defense against (malaria) as compared to the local population. Interestingly, the local population also were not as devastated by European smallpox as the original residents of the Americas were. The guns and steel eventually made up for it, though. But it took a good while. In the initial encounters between the Zulus and the Europeans, the palefaces were all but obliterated. ---

I read the person Joe Pesci’s character in _Goodfellas_ was based on was actually heavyset guy (but the sociopathic tendencies were real), which kind of changes things a bit, ya know? ---
