It's time, once again, for Americans to tell the world how to fix soccer.

Indeed. The final was one of the more exciting games of soccer I’ve seen in recent memory, and it was 0-0 until the 2nd Extra Time. The excitement was due to the edge of your seat tension. The close misses (esp by Argentina), the header hitting the post by Germany, etc. That sort of tension is why people enjoy soccer. Small rule changes to open up the game more (such as when FIFA increased points for a win to 3 points from 2 points) are fine, but to tinker with the basic reason why the sport is so beloved seems to be searching for an answer to an unasked question.

Yes, by the standard **Yog **uses for futbol, a baseball no-hitter is as boring as shit.

But I doubt he would agree.

Deciding 4 years of football on penalty kicks is obscene.

I’m not sure if this has been suggested yet, but handle the extra time similar to the way that the NHL handles it’s overtime:

  • make the extra time sudden death.
  • in the first extra time period reduce the number of players for each team to 8
  • in the second extra time period reduce the number of players for each team to 6

optionally eliminate the offside rule in the extra time.

What you don’t seem to get is that if no-hitters or not rare in baseball, they would be boring. If they were common, it would kill the game.

Soccer will never really compete with the big sports in the US as long as it is so low-scoring. And hockey will remain in a tier lower than the others as well.

Oh well, in any case soccer can never provide the finesse and complexity that American football does. It’s a great game for little kids to play, though — or impoverished adults who have little more than a ball to work with, and not even a flat, smooth surface to dribble a basketball on…which is no doubt why it is so popular in the developing world.

I just wish they’d move the PK’s back about 10 feet. It’s ridiculous that the goalie has to jump before the ball is even kicked to make a save. They should move it back until the conversion rate is about 50% instead of 80%.

I’m gonna say … no. Not to anyone paying attention to the game.

Strange that the National Pinball League never made it.

Speaking as a passionate fan of American football and baseball: Did you even *see *Goetze’s goal?

They tried #1 and people hated it. The best part of Extra Time aside from a goal is the other team fighting like Hell to get an equalizer.

#2 and #3 is a no-go. Think about it. In extra time, the players are dead tired. You want them to run even farther (that’s what reducing the players would do)?

And offsides exists for a reason - camping in front of a goal and having players try to hoof it to you is not particularly exciting.

The one thing the MLS introduced that was interesting was to do a different form of penalty kicks - like hockey shootouts - give it to the offensive player on the 35 yard line.

I did not. I did not see any of the World Cup this year, except for a couple still photos. But I did watch about two or three World Cups ago, and it was from that experience (plus my son playing soccer) that I formed my opinions.

well, then relax the substitution rules in extra time

I wouldn’t mind adding a 4th substitution for Extra Time. However, one of the important aspects of soccer is the ability to have endurance to go a full 90+. For that reason any discussion of in and out substitutions go absolutely no where because they’d change the nature of the sport that people really enjoy. Soccer fans would not be pleased if there was increased specialization as there are in American sports.

I think this is a pretty solid idea regardless of any other changes. I’d add one additional sub for extra time.

Also, I’d allow teams to sub a player on for a player with a clear head injury while that player is being evaluated. The fact that the current rules almost require that a possibly concussed player keep trying to play is a real problem, IMO. It would certainly lead to some faked head injuries, but I guess I’m willing to pay that price to keep athletes’ brains intact.

Sure… the point is that we NEED a result. PKs are so unsatisfying because (a) they’re such a lottery, and (b) they have so little to do with actual soccer (I mean, not NOTHING, they are more related than a weightlifting competition or something).

We also agree, I assume that if you had only two players on the pitch (one goalie on each side), a goal would be scored very quickly.

So once you get to 120 minutes, you keep playing indefinitely, except that after every 2 minutes, you wait for a stoppage of play, and when you get one, each team removes a player. Fewer and fewer and fewer players, and someone’s going to score pretty soon. And if some of the players are exhausted, well, they should be the first ones that their team removes, and if one team is more fit, then they’ll win, but at least they’ll win by kicking a ball into a goal vs. multiple active defenders, not from the PK spot.

That’s right, because I’m American and I don’t like soccer. Instead of us adapting to it, the sport should adapt to us. That is the point of this topic isn’t it?

I’ve never watched more than 3 consecutive minutes of cricket in my life

Defense should be able to be expressed in stats, otherwise you just have subjective opinion. That’s like saying the team that’s the favorite should just be given the championship, because that’s subjective too.

Defense and offense works together. If all you have is defense, you’re only playing one side of the game. A stalemate in chess is boring, even though it may be advantageous. It should end with one clear winner. Otherwise, why play? Just declare the athletes great and they all give great effort and go home. The ultimate point of playing the game is to win. NOT to be a good sport. NOT to do your best. NOT to even make the fans happy or create drama. Its to win. And if a game is set up so that defense is so overwhelmingly outmatching the offense in a way where sheer luck determines the winner, then it must be changed

Having more scoring would make the game fairer by reducing the luck of penalty kicks deciding the game. It would reward players for being better, because just because you have a lot of energy and can run around for 90 mins should not make you a good soccer player, you should be equally proficient in scoring. More scoring would reward better coaching, who would then have to practice both sides of the field rather than spending most of the time on defense and hope that a chance to score opens up. And it would get more people interested in it, guaranteed, because the soccer lovers now are not going to desert the game and anything that gets the US and its massive amount of dollars into it would improve the game

While you are right about that, you are wrong because you didn’t take into account 0-0 ties. A 0-0 is basically wasted effort: nothing was accomplished and nobody had any point in playing the game. You could have dropped that game from existence and it wouldn’t have mattered. Soccer tries to make it matter by institution a system of points and weird rankings like group play, but it would be more definitive if we actually got an answer as to who’s better

Ok, well there’s something. I don’t get the exact definitions of each of them, but I’m glad something like that is tracked.

However, one of my biggest problems with the defense is the overwhelming focus of that vs. offense. 0 is the lowest score you can get in any of these scoring type sports. It should not be a regular occurrence. People talk about how scoring would mean less if it was done more. What about the other way around? Defense and shut-outs mean less if scores can consistently be hovering around 0. Doesn’t that bother you? At this point, I see soccer fans as holding on to their issues that they refuse to resolve vs. possibly creating others, but it doesn’t make soccer any more untouchable like some people seem to want to think it is. If scoring goes up to 5 or 10 on average, so what? So each goal will mean less, that just means you guys can get excited over actual shut-outs, which would be much more difficult to do now

I disagree because I expressed stated that defense that is registered does matter, such as a pitcher’s stats during a no-hitter.

That’s wonderful, but I’m betting most soccer fans would consider PK’s to be more real soccer than 7 on 7. At least PK’s are something that happens in a game. I mean all the tactics are based on 11 v. 11.

I’d rather have a MLS like 35 yrd shootout than a 7 v. 7 or 6 v. 6 match with dead tired players. And I bet most soccer fans would agree with me. Basically removing players after 120 is a no go.

Furthermore, the greatest complaint soccer fans have about American sports are a lack of flow. Stopping the match every 2 minutes to take a player off would completely destroy the flow of the game.

Huh. Well, this may just be an unresolvable issue of preference. But when both teams have two red cards are it’s 9 v 9, I don’t feel like people are suddenly saying “wow, that’s a different sport entirely”. Or if there’s a breakaway and there’s temporarily a 3-on-3 situation, it’s not like it’s suddenly not soccer.

People generally don’t consider games with two red cards on each side (very rare, mind) as an example of a good game. And a breakaway with 3 on 3 is a short field with a break off of an 11 on 11 match-up.

In addition, the NHL, which does go to a 4 on 4 in OT, uses a penalty shootout to decide matches after overtime, instead of eliminating players. They realize that at some point removing more players changes the game.

Obviously this is a subjective question, but if I see kids in a sandlot playing 5-on-5, I say with no hesitation that what they’re playing is soccer. Kids taking turns taking PKs aren’t playing soccer at all, they’re taking PKs. Ymmv.

And 5 on 5 American football in a front yard is easily identified with American football, but no fan is going to think that is a proper professional game.
